Turn a Dlink 524 into a 624 :)

If you use a di524 you know how terrible the latest firmware is.  The di-624 continually gets all the updates and beta releases while the di-524 gets left in the dust.  Now that the di-524 revD is out, dont expect the revC to ever get fair treatment.

There may be a solution.  Someone has posted instructions for flashing the 524 to a 624.  At that point you can use all the beta fixes as well as any future official di-624 firmware.  See the thread here:  http://www.dslreports.com/forum/remark,15034139

Disclaimer:  This may not work.  This may brick your router.  If you use the file instead of making it yourself with the instructions provided, it may have evil code in it.  It will void you warranty (not that dlink has ever helped me as far as RMAs are concerned).

I have not tried this yet.  I bought a wrt54g off ebay.  I will try this and post back once I have a replacement on hand.  Please post your results if you try this.

update: I sucessfully hacked my di-524.  It now appears as a 624.  Once you do this, it will accept future di-624 firmware upgrades normally.  I am currently running the latest 2.70beta10 firmware from dlink.  No problems yet, but this is beta firmware and it's too early to tell
