Unable to access specific web sites - blocked

Hi

I cannot access certain web sites - Amazon, Ebay and Symantec for example. IE says screen not available and Firefox that the 'server will not allow access'. I cannot update my virus checker from Symantec as a result. Very worrying.

Do I have a virus of some sort or what?

Any ideas would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Have you checked your Internet Explorer security settings to make sure these sites are not in the Restricted Sites list?  (Open Internet Explorer, go to Tools > Internet Options > Secuirty > Restricted Sites).

Also do a search on your computer for the file named hosts.  Note that this file has no extension and is not the file named hosts.sam.  When you find the hosts file, open it in Notepad and see if the sites that you cannot access are listed.  If they are, then it is likely that some spyware or malware residing on your computer has changed the hosts file.  Close the file and rename it hosts.old and see if this fixes the problem.

First make sure is it just secured websites that you cannot access. ie, websites which require you to logon like ur banking site.

As i see you might be using the NORTON firewall. first try disabling the firewall and see if it works. If not open the NORTON Internet security and click the tab for personal firewall. clcik the configure  button on the bottom right corner and then click the tab on the top for programs. hightlight all the programs in the list and remove them. reboot the computer and see if it fixes the issue.
