Unable to connect to internet
Inspiron 9300 with internal Intel wireless adapter and external D-Link Xtreme N wireless notebook adapter. Running XP with SP3. Have checked with D-Link and router(DIR 655) is working fine. Have strong connect signal anf local network is okay. Cannot get on the internet. Have tried all the suggestions with startup programs and disabling one at a time and rebooting did not solve the problem. I have another laptop and a desktop that are working fine. Problem just cropped up all at once and is driving me crazy. 9300 laptop will not connect via wireless or ethernet. Where to from here. I'm a rookie to Forums so if I blunder please excuse ...thanks

Steve,
Makes no difference wired or wireless. Tray shows connections with strong signals but can't get IE to complete connection.

Let's try to isolate the problem. Will the 9300 connect if you try a wired etherent connection to the router. This will tell us if it is a general Windows networking problem or a problem specific to wireless.

You may have gotten a corrupt download. Try downloading it again. I just downloaded it and it worked for me.

Downloaded Winsockxpfix.exe and when I try to open the file I get an error window that says:
C:\Documents and Settings\Jeff\Desktop\Winsockxpfix.exe is not a valid Win32 application
What am I doing wrong?

If you look at the download site, it say 1412 kb. Thus, you are not getting all of it.

By "loading it", I hope you mean that you ran it and told it to fix errors. If so, let's see if we can get a hint at where the problem is. On the computer with the problem, go to Start > Run and type cmd then click OK. In the command prompt window that opens, type ipconfig /all then hit the enter key. Write down the output from this command or select it and save it to a txt file, then copy this output into a reply to this message.

After you run the command, right click anywhere in the command prompt window, choose Select All, then hit the Enter key (this copies to the clipboard). Then open Notepad (Start > All Progams > Accessories > Notepad), click Edit > Paste, then click File > Save and give the file a name and save it someplace where you can find it.

Open a reply window in the Dell forums, then open the text file. Use the mouse to select the text in the file, click on Edit > Copy, then go back to the Dell forum reply window and click on Edit > Paste.

Just to make sure we are still on the same page here, this was run on the 9300 that is having the problem, correct?
The D-Link adapter is getting an IP address, but it is not one that I would expect from a router. Do you get a similar IP address on other computers that are successfully connecting to through this router (i.e 172.16.0.xxx, where the first three numbers should be the same, but the xxx numbers should be different)? Whih make and model router do you have?
