Follow up for those interested: it turned out to be a driver issue, it appears. An updated driver downloaded from Intel's site seems to have cleared the problem. 4 or 5 reboots with the new driver and the error has gone away. The driver from Intel was version 12.4 while the driver on the Dell site was version 11.5.
