WIn 7 Network - not showing XP machines

On one of my WIn 7 machines (named PC05)  , all is fine. I can see  all my XP machines under Start/Network.

On the other Win 7 machine (named PC01), I cannot.  I only see the WIn 7 machines.

How can I resovle this? Read a few dozen posts already from various searches, Nothing helps

I have a basic home network with:

  • -two Win 7 PCs (Home Premium 64 bit), named PC01 and PC05
  • -three XP machines (all SP3), named PC02, PC03 and PC04.
  • -all are on the same workgroup
  • -all have the same user name and password
  • -I do not use homegroups.
  • -I use static IP address, and I acan ping all machines from any other machine

On my main Win 7 machine ( PC01),  I cannot see any XP machines - I can only see the other Win 7 machine ( PC05). See screenshot.

Yet, on my other Win 7 machine (PC05), I can see all the machines.

I compared the obvious settings, and my Win 7 machines appear to be set up the same way (eg Advanced Sharing Serttings), etc. the same as far as I
can tell.

Any suggestion where I can start digging deeper ??

Network Map does not work either.

Sheldon G,

Try reading...

Share Files and Printers between Windows 7 and XP

This works both ways.

Sheldon G,

Do you have a Sheldon G account on all the systems with identical passwords?

Make sure all the computers are on the same WORKGROUP?

Yup, they all have the same WORKGROUP, and user name, same password. Issue is not on the XP machines,

Recall my XPS Win 7 machine sees all other pcs' perfectly fine.

Its my Demneiosn Win 7 machine which does not. I compareed the two WIn 7 machines- each has the same Advanced Network Sharing settings, the same Services etc,

If I type in an ip address or the PC's name, I have access... but the XP's simply refuse to show up under \Start\Network, on the Dimension Win 7 machine.

Sheldon G, Check your cirus program(s) and firewall(s) Rick

Windows firewall on both
Avast antivirus on both

PC01- no XP machines visible
PC05- all XP machines visible.

Sheldon G,All your advanced sharing setting are turned on? Rick

Yup.

Both Win 7 machines have identical Advanced shared settings, ie,

-turn ON network discovery
-turn ON file and printer sharing
-turn ON sharing so anyone with network acess can read....
-media stream in OFF
-use 128 bit encruption
-turn ON password protected sharing
-allow windows to manage homegroup conenction.
-turn ON sharing

With the above settings on PC05, I can see all XP machines from PC05
With the above settings on PC01, I cannot see any XP machines from PC01 (but I can access them by name or ip address)

On PC01, if I manually type in \\pc02 and \\pc03 and \\pc04 , they all appear in thelist under Networks, and they all work... but if I close the window and re-open it, it goes back to only showing me \\pc01 and \\pc05

So there is something off in terms of 'network discovery"

On PC05, it works great, all machines are there all the time.

Sheldon,

Firstly if your PC01 can access the XP machines manually it clearly means there is not networking problems between PC01 and the rest.

It might take several minutes for computers running previous versions of Windows to be discovered and become visible in the Network folder.

Check if 'IP Helper' & 'TCP/IP Netbios helper' services are started and set to automatic.

Yes, IP Helper' & 'TCP/IP Netbios helper' services are started and set to automatic.

This is a tough nut to crack....

CAUTIOUSLY OPTIMISTIC SUCCESS...

In addition to  IP Helper & 'TCP/IP Netbios helper, other posts also recommended checking Services such as:

  • Computer Browser (one machine only)
  • DHCP Client
  • DNS Client
  • Network Location Awareness
  • Remote Procedure Call (RPC)
  • Server
  • TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper
  • Workstation

These were already all started/automatic.

However I noticed this was not:

  • Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator

As soon as I started it, my XP machines showed up.

I currenty have the following Advanced Network Settings

  • Network Discovery on
  • File/Print Sharing on
  • Public Folder sharing on
  • Media Streaming off
  • Use 128-Bit encryption off
  • Password Protected sharing off
  • HomeGroup Connections "Use user accounts ..."

Of course I need to give it all a few days/weeks to see if it really holds, and what this now means when I am on the XP machines, but at least I am a step closer now!

PudgyOne - thanks for the efforts/suggestions - misery loves company!

I am glad you got it working... Restart PC01 and if you still get your XP systems i believe this RPC Locator should be it.
