WPA TM1300 problem solved

The short version of this post is that if you are have lost the ability to use WPA and WPA-PSK after applying the Windows XP KB826942 rollup patch, it may be due to a problem with the TM1300 driver.  In order to get the functionality back, you may need to roll-back to the driver immediately proceeding the 3.20.23.0 version, which is posted as the current version, then reinstall v3.20.23.0.

My system is a recent 600M with a TrueMobile 1300 MPCI card running XP Pro.

The longer story follows.  I was having endless problems losing the ability to select WPA and WPA-PSK that at first appeared to be random and intermittent.  After a couple of scorched earth  (reformat and install fresh) reinstalls of Win XP Pro I have tracked down what appears to be the problem.  There are many complexities in my setup that may or may not have contributed to the problem, although it appears unlikely given my most recent testing.

In the final test, I reinstalled clean and successfully loaded the various most current drivers and my extensive applications.  All the time, WPA worked fine.  It worked all day yesterday without problem.

This morning at the office, I made an image file of the entire disk, just in case I developed the problem again.  I installed the recommended Q815485.  All seemed to continue to work fine.  After loading Novell NW Client v4.90 and SP1, all was still working correctly.  (I am not sure how the installation of NWClient may or may not have contributed to the problem.)

Next, I installed the KB826942 rollup patch.  Immediately following install, I lost the ability to setup WPA and WPA-PSK.  OK, this is why I made an image.  Boot to the CD and reformat/reinstall the image.  Now the REALLY strange part.  WPA still was not available.  How could this be?  Everything was returned to the original state that had operated successfully for over a day.  It appeared that something may have reset some hardware feature.  (I am skipping over the numerous uninstall/reinstalls of the Q815485 and KB826942 patches, none of which worked.)

Finally, I tried installing the earlier version of TM1300 driver.  As expected, the WPA was not available as it should not be.  Then after reboot, reinstall v3.20.23.0.  Finally, WPA was available again!  When I had previously just reinstalled v3.20.23.0 without first installing the earlier version, WPA did not reappear.  It appears that the there must be some type of hardware switch that is set by the driver.  In order to have it reset the switch to allow WPA, you must have to install the old version to reset it, which in turn allows v3.20.23.0 to reset it back to allow WPA.  Why and how the KB826942 rollup patch could reset this switch is a mystery to me, but something that apparently needs attention from DELL and Microsoft.

Hope this helps some of you avoid the days of aggravation that I have had tracking down and solving this problem.
