DSL modems and cable modems are completely different.  You need to specify which of these you need.

I have looked at several websites and have heard good and bad things about Motorola surfboard, DLink and linksys.  Iam just looking for some feedback on a good model. Thanks

If you getting Charter cable, then you do not want a DSL modem as it will not work on a cable system.  Have you asked Charter which cable modems they recommend and are easily available in your area?   Cable modems are pretty simple devices, so I doubt you are going to see much difference in performance or reliability in whichever one you choose.

Hopefully someone else will answer.  I have been using a Motorola Surfboard for the last 6 years and have never had a problem.   Just make it clear that you are looking for a Cable modem, not a DSL modem.

My Surfboard is an SBS100.  I have no experience with D-Link.
