What am I missing? (first post, long, sorry)

The setup:

1- Diminsion 2400 Desktop with Windows XP (pentium4)

1- Gateway Select 400 Desktop with Windows 98 version1 (AMD-K6-2 )

1- LinkSys 2.4 GHz wireless access point router with 4 access points available

2- CAT5e cables (one attached to each computer)

1-DSL modem (type unknown but it works great! :) )

2- ethernet cards (one per computer)

I'm trying to transfer my files off the old Gateway to the new Dell. I've bugged tech support incessantly and still have no practical solution.

I've tried a direct cable peer to peer transfer which never connected.

I've tried establishing a virtual network and a normal home network, but neither has worked.

I even went and got a brand new cd-rw external drive, but since the old computer doesn't support firewire, that didn't work, either.

I also tried a file migration utility software, and the Files and Settings wizard... they didn't work.

I've also tried a Iomega Zip Drive, which works, but it's slow going.

Is there a way to transfer 3 gigs of data to the new computer without having to watch my hair turn grey?

Thank you for your help (here's hoping! lol)

EDIT: I'm trying to connect the two computers to get them to share information or at least talk to each other. Hope this is the right forum for this question)

Well, partially the right forum.  Why all the access point for two hard wired machines?

The following two links are good ones to setup a basic home network and sharing files.  Please post back with any issues.

The router is really to serve my computer and my sister's. She has a Dell Inspiron2650. I got a router with extra ports in case we needed to route periferals through it.

As for the hard wired computers, eventually the Gateway will be retired or moved into service for my nephew so he can have internet service, too, (after I download EVERY parental control I can find!) so the hard wiring will be temporary.

I'll look at the sites you've suggested. Thank you for helping me.
