Which type of wireless router do I need

Ok, I want to update my wired router and access point into one wireless router.  I have a wired desktop, my wife has wired/wireless g and my new Dell Studio 17 has the new wireless n card.

My question is do I really need a router that works with n as my Comcast cable only gives me a top speed of 8 mips.  Wouldn't this mean a wireless g router would be more than enough and much more relieable at this time.   Am I overlooking something?

You are correct in getting an N router will not improve your internet connection speed. It will improve your lan speed so long as you have an N adapter. You can settle for a G router which will work just fine if you dont want to spend the extra money on N. Its your call.  N has not been ratified yet so there are those who are still waiting for this to occur. If you do buy I would recommend Linksys or Netgear.

I too have the Studio 17 with the wireless 'N'.

Now, if you have short distance and very few thick walls that can obstruct your wireless reception, then you are fine with the 'G' one.  If the contrary, then you should opt for the 'N'.  Also a MIMO wireless router would be a wise choice.

I had the same problem.  With the 'G' I was not that much able to connect but when I changed to 'N', I was able to also connect from the back garden!!!

Both have their good things.

About brands, I had Linksys as the 'G' which was not that much of a deal, but now I bought the Belkin N1 Vision and it is awsome.  The range is excellent and the connection never hangs.  Obviously you have to consider your budget.

I too wanted the N1 Vision but every online store that carries them and also have reviews there is nothing but horror stories on them  It's like maybe 1 out of 10 work and the others end up returning them.  Some think the V2.000 of the router has fixed all the problems but no relieable info out there yet.  I emailed Belkin but was just given the brush off plus I haven't heard from any of the customer reviews of anyone being happy with their support which comes from India or other non English speaking country.  Do you know which version you have.  I looked at my local stores and on the bottom of the box it tells.  All I could find was v1.000 routers.

Just checked my version.  On the box it states that I have V.1021UK

I bought it from here they ship to most of the countries and from the UK to arrive here in Malta it took only 5days, but now they are shipping through DHL which should be much faster.

I have the Cable router eventhough I have ADSL internet.  I did contact Belkin and they said that it should work and it actaully did.  Just hooked it up with my modem and the initial setup was extreamly easy.  Just plug and play, literaly.

Hope you can find one for you or maybe buy one from the link above.

Anymore help, just ask.
