Wifi issue with Dell L501x

Hello,

2 days ago, my laptop was connected to my router and working fine. But it then randomly disconnected and haven't been able to connect back since. I am using an ethernet cable to access the internet, and have tried many ways to try and resolve the issue but nothing is working.

I have a Dell L501x (Win 7 64-bit) with the Intel Centrino 1000 BGN wifi card. I have restarted the router and modem and disconnected all devices and tried reconnecting, but to no avail. I have tried updating the drivers, system restoring and using safe mode (with network) but nothing works. The modem and router are working fine as other devices connect and access the internet, it is just my laptop that cannot.

I am sure it is not a hardware issue as the card detects all the surrounding networks. The troubleshooter only says "An administrator profile failed to obtain an IP address from the DHCP server."

I would appreciate some help with this problem,

Thanks.

Hello Rick,

Sorry for the delay. I finally figured out the problem - it is the modem/router itself. It's really old and has some security function where it kicks out incoming connections if there are a few already present. Had to reset the IP gateway right from the router itself.

I really appreciate all the help from you,

Thanks.

darkevia,

Avast is not going to be a problem.

The 169.254 IP address tells me that there is a problem with the wireless router communicating with the router/modem.

You didn't change wireless router or modems recently, did you?

What is the make and model of your wireless router?

Power off your ISP modem/router and your wireless router(if any) for 30 seconds. Then power on the ISP modem/router. Wait 15 seconds, then power on the wireless router(if any)

Restart the computer and try to connect.

What happens?

Rick

Actually, there was a change of both routers and modems recently (around 2-3 weeks ago, but everything was working fine till about 2 days ago).

The current router is a D-link DIR-600L.

I have tried restarting them yesterday, but nothing changed. I will try again now just to make sure.

darkevia,

As a starting point, I usually prefer using these Recommended Wireless Router Settings I use channel 11. I would make a new SSID to make connecting easier.

Hi Rick,

So I restarted everything and again, nothing has changed. Ethernet is the only way I can connect my laptop to the internet.

I am pretty sure the recommended settings are in place. I am at a complete loss as to why the wifi isn't working. All other devices are working perfectly.

darkevia,

Belkin routers are one of the few routers that I have had problems connecting with. The have issues with WPA security. Thompson is another problem router. The ISP knows about the connection issue.

When this happens to me I go to Drivers & Downloads enter the service tag, then select the operating system. Download the drivers and save them to your desktop.

Make a system restore point

Start, control panel, device manager, network adapters, right click on Intel(R) Centrino(R) Wireless-N 1000, left click uninstall. Tell it to remove drivers and software.

Restart your computer.

When you log back in, the new hardware wizard will try to install the drivers but fail. Install the drivers saved to your desktop.

What happens?

Places to look to see if your Connection is enabled
