I am assuming she is using the method of just pushing and holding the power button until it cuts power which is not necessarily good for the PC.

You are much better off going through start and shut down. It can ruin the power supply in some cases if you just cut the power like that, and can cause some other problems with the computer. I once ruined a power supply by just hitting the button on an old HP I had. If it was safe to shut down like that I don't think there would be a shut down button in the OS and notice how it takes longer shutting down like that than just hitting the button. There is a big difference. :)

BossyMamma,

Let me give you another view.  If you are running Windows XP it is perfectly safe to use the Power Button to shut down Windows if your power options are set up correctly.  Right click an empty space on your desktop and select Properties.  Click on the Screen Saver tab, then on the Power button at the bottom.  Click on the Advanced tab and then under "When I press the power button on my computer, make sure the option is set to Shut Down.  This setting should have the same effect as if you went to Start > Turn off Computer > Turn Off.
