A wireless router has different frequencies. Most wireless 802.11 a/b/g routers use the 2.4gh band. Wireless N routers use the 5.8gh band.
Without getting too technical, A wireless 802.11 b/g/n card will connect to your wireless b/g router with no problems.
If you get a few minutes and want to read, try reading
IEEE 802.11 - Wikipedia and Wi-Fi - Wikipedia
There is also some great information located at Networking tips and tweaks
