Wireless Connection to Wanadoo Livebox Router

Hi,

I have recently purchased Wanadoo Broadband and am using their Wireless Router, Livebox.

I have been having issues connecting computers to the network that are using 3rd party wireless adapters instead of the pre-supplied Wanadoo wireless adapter, provided by Inventel.

I am therefore unable to connect to the network using my Dell Wireless 1450 USB Adapter. The adapter is able to find the network and all the settings appear to be correct, however the adapter simply won't connect to this network.

I am having the same issue with two other 3rd party wireless adapter, produced by Creatix and Broadcom, and therefore I do not believe that it is an issue with the Dell Adapter, rather an issue with my network settings and Wanadoo allowing access to these 3rd party devices.

Wanadoo unfortunately are unable to support me with this issue and have recommended that I contact the wireless adapter providers directly... as Dell's Technical Support is not open on the weekends, I thought I should give this a try! :-)

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, many thanks in advance.

Scott

scottyzh,

I have no experience with Wanadoo or the Livebox router, but I can offer some suggestions.

First, while trying to get the various PCs to connect, configure the router with absolutely no security enabled, especially any kind of encryption.  Once you get connectivity, enable wireless security one step at a time.

Make sure all the equipment is running the most available drivers, especially the firmware in the router.  It looks like the Livebox router is an Inventel DV4210.  Maybe you can get updated firmware directly from Inventel.  I've seen your symptoms a number of times and in all cases upgrading firmware and drivers has solved the problem.  I would be cautious about this since Wanadoo may have proprietary firmware.

As a last option, get a more "mainstream" router from a brand name like Linksys, DLink, Belkin or Netgear.  Configure it for access point operation (as opposed to a router) and connect it to the Livebox via ethernet.  Disable the wireless capability in the Livebox.  I know this is a bit extreme, but at least you will have complete control over the wireless router instead of being at Wanadoo's mercy.
