Wireless Router and Adapter for Dimension XPS 400---Please help
Greetings!
I got a Dimension XPS 400 in December. My roommate has an old Gateway piece o'junk running Win98 up in the attic which is currently wired to the cable modem (also in the attic and one floor directly above where my PC is). My roommate doesn't even use that computer anymore, but just brings her laptop to the attic and physically hooks up to the cable modem when she needs an Internet connection.
I desperately need to share that broadband Internet connection and I figured the easiest way would be to set a up a wireless network. After doing some research, I was considering the Linksys WRT54GS Router along with the Linksys WMP54GS PCI Card (or Linksys WUSB54GS USB adpater). My questions are:
- Will either of these adapters work properly with my version of XP? In my "research" I have come across a lot of scary horror stories involving XP SP2 and wireless gear
- PCI Card vs. USB adapter...which is better? How difficult is it to install the PCI card?
- Do we need to even bother having one computer (the old one) wired to a router..i.e. can we just set it up so that the router connects to the cable modem and then we connect the other 2 computers (my desktop and her laptop) wirelessly?

My opinion is that the best place for the wireless is on the level (floor) where you actually are, which would mean running an Ethernet cable (25-feet?) from the cable model in the attic down to your level, at which point your room mate could connect to one of the other three "wired" ports which you connect with your wireless. I assume you have (at least) one open PCI slot in your desk computer. I don't know the range (distance) you want to be able to roam but excellent coverage is provided by Pre-N (Belkin?)
