Wireless adapter not recognized...use System Restore to earlier date and laptop connects immediately
121213 Wireless Adapter Problems
Dell Inspiron 1520 Windows XP SP 3
My Dell suddenly will not connect to access point / wireless router / DSL. Other computer in house connects fine. Computer is auto-updated by Windows, McAfee, Secunia, and frequently checked with System Mechanic, McAfee, Lavasoft, MalwareBytes. One of the auto updates may have been interrrupted.
Says Wireless adapter "not present"...Does not recognize wireless in the area. Try to "repair" adapter, but message says adapter not present.
I then use System Restore to 4 day earlier date and laptop connects immediately. I see a new symbol "Local Area connection on Actiontec m1000 has been added in the Network Connection window, and the Wireless Network Connection says it is connected to the correct network that has worked fine for several years.
I have several Windows updates for the Malware Tool that install immediately if I reboot, but then I cannot connect to the network and have to use System Restore (which is taking longer and longer to restore...appx 1.5 hrs now).
Appreciate help.

Hi DellRichard,
If these processes constantly consume excessive memory and CPU, there may be a conflict on your PC with another process or service. I recommend you to disable all startup items via 'Msconfig'. If the problem gets fixed, enable startup items one at a time until the conflict is identified.
You may want to refer to the following 'Microsoft article' for detailed information: http://bit.ly/16OjiG
If the issue persists, please try the McAfee uninstaller tool; you may also restore 'factory defaults' or perform a fresh 'Windows re install'
(Note: Factory defaults or Windows re install leads to complete loss of data; please backup your personal data on priority before attempting these restore functions)
Hope this helps. Do reply if you have any further questions. I would be glad to assist.

I deactivated McAfee Antivirus and the Intel Proset Wireless adapter reappeared and the internet can be accessed. I removed McAfee entirely and will not use it in the future. I hope this helps others with similar problems.

Hi DellRichard,
It appears that a corrupt firewall was causing the wireless issue. Basis the information in your original post, the system performance may have been affected due to a software corruption/conflict. Such issues may get fixed with 'system restore'; however they may re-occur after the 'updates' are reinstalled.
I acknowledge that McAfee removal may have worked for you; however, similar issues may occur with any other 'firewall' also. I recommend you to re install McAfee and check the performance again. After a fresh re installation, it is likely that the firewall corruption gets eliminated and the system works fine. If not, there is a possibility of software conflict with McAfee in the system.
You may want to run the McAfee removal tool (before re installing it) to wipe off the software from the machine completely (This clears the McAfee residuals from Windows Registry, if any). Please install the McAfee removal application using the following link: http://bit.ly/SYQJ8J
You may also want to update the 'wireless card drivers' for best performance. Various 'wireless cards' were shipped with the system; if you need further help with the installation of the correct driver, please share the following details with me:
- Make of Windows XP (32 bit or 64 bit)?
- Wireless card installed in the system (To check the name of wireless card, click 'Start icon' > Right click 'My Computer' > Manage > 'Device Manager' > Expand 'Network Adapters')
Hope this helps. Do reply if you have any further questions. I would be glad to assist.

Hi DellRichard,
Please try updating the 'wireless drivers' using the following link": http://dell.to/VaYVz3
-Download the file on the 'desktop screen' and double click it to re install (follow the on screen instructions to finish updating)
Also share if you ran the 'McAfee removal tool'; and tried re installing it.Do reply if you have any further questions. I would be glad to assist.

Thank you for your information and assistance. I have not reinstalled McAfee. Later I will use the McAfee Removal tool, because I see some vestiges are still present. My Dell computer continues to work fine.
One thing I had hoped to resolve by removing McAfee, was a situation where my computer is basically taken over about 10:00 PM each Wed night, as I can see significant hard drive activity. Removing McAfee did not help. So much of the computer’s resources are being used that it is basically impossible for me to do any work. Looking in Windows Task Manager shows no applications operating, significant 15-30% performance, and lots of processes…MsMpEng.exe 56K , SVCHost.exe 21K , AOL Software.exe 20K… are the biggest.
Do you have any suggestions as how to eliminate this Wednesday-recurring computer activity?
