jwhoke44,

Hopefully I can remember this...

Start, control panel, network. Right click on your wireless connection, left click properties. Look for Internet Protocol(TCP/IP) click on it, then click on properties. Have your settings match mine.

Also try running WinSock XP Fix

D-Link DIR-651 Wireless N router;  currently set for both G and N;  not clear on why this matters?

My remote desktop unit is connecting ok (I may not have made that clear in my original post),  but my Mini 10v laptop won't display any webpage, even though the Dell Wlan utility says that it is connected (true for both my home wireless network as well as the one at the hotel where I was the last couple of nights).

Thx

jwhoke44,

If you Dell Mini is using XP, it needs XP SP2 or higher installed or it will not support WPA security.

I would try these Recommended Wireless Router Settings I use channel 11. I do not see in the specifications if this is a dual-bad wireless N router. If it is, then great, you'll need to setup a jwhoke44G and a jwhoke44N SSID. If it's a single band router, the adapter will connect only on the wireless G mode.

Go to device manager(right click my computer, left click properties, left click hardware, left click device manager)

Click on network, your network adapter, advanced. Look to see if your adapter has antenna diversity. If it does, then try changing the Antenna Diversity from Auto to Aux, then restart your computer and try to connect. (I'm guessing that you may have a 1397 adapter installed)

Rick,

Thanks for the suggestions.  I've tried the changes you've recommended, but still no success.   By the way, my laptop is Win XP SP3.

Is there a way to post screen prints from my Dell WLAN utility?  A big red flag seems to be that the Gateway IP Ping is failing????

Problem statement:  Laptop recognizes the wireless network, but cannot open any webpage nor Skype (even though other computers recognize my Skype ID as being online).  These same issues occur when connected to other wireless network, such as the free wireless at the hotel I was at this week.

These problems do not occur when this laptop is connected to LAN via Ethernet cable.  Other wireless devices (remote PC) are not having any problems connecting and getting to the internet on my home wireless network, so I don't believe it is my router (plus the fact that my laptop is having the same problems when I was trying to use the hotel's free wi-fi)..

Problem first occurred after I had tried changing the wireless network security to WPA-Personal;  I had problems and couldn‘t get to the internet, so I set things back to WEP … but still could not get my laptop to the internet after that.

Also tried wireless connection via external USB network adapter … same problems occurred with my laptop (seems to rule out a hardware problem).

Dell WLAN utility program would seem to indicate problems related to the fact that the Gateway IP Ping fails? (Is there a way to send a copy of the actual screen prints?)  I've noted the results below.

Results after opening IE:  "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage".   (I've typed in different URLs to test with the same results).

Results when opening Skype:  "Skype Home unavailable" ... even though my other PCs on the network think that my laptop Skype ID is on and active.

Dell WLAN Utility:

Link status … all items look normal and connected EXCEPT that the Gateway IP address is “Not available”

Network statistics show packets both sent and received ... appears to be normal.

Network tool Site Monitor correctly displays the wireless network (finds all networks within range).   Broadcasting from home network in B and G mode.

Hardware diagnostics all passed.

Connection diagnostics all “Passed” down to Gateway IP Ping, which failed;  tests after that were skipped by the Utility.

WLAN card info:  Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-card Rev. 5.00

jwhoke44,

Try the Finding System Information Tool or post an ipconfig /all log.

For screenshots, hit PrntScr, then open paint, then paste the image there and save it. When at the forums, click on the little picture icon, then it will ask you the location of the image.

John,

Glad you got it working! :emotion-21: Thanks for posting back. Since you have the Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-Card, go to device manager, network, double click on Dell Wireless 1397 WLAN Mini-Card, advanced. Look for Antenna Diversity and change it from Auto to Aux.

Take care,

Rick
