anivirus

Hi

I have a inspiron notebook and am connected to the internet through DSL through qwest MSN which comes with a free antivirus, firewall, spyware program through mcafee.  however is the best thing to use.   I have also bought the norton antivirus.  should I not install the free one through MSN and just use the norton.
A tech support person from Qwest MSN told me that I need to have the antivirus and firewall disabled when viewing the internet.  I asked him how my computer was protected if my antivirus is disabled, he said it does not need to be, once the computer is turned on it runs a scan and then you can disable it.  this does not sound right to me, can someone explain this to me in lamens terms as I am not a computer person but want to understand what I need to do and what is best.

thanks

You don't want to have the virus scann turned off/disabled while using it. That will leave the PC open to virus attacks and not pick them up until the next scan. I would check with your ISP again and hope to get someone who knows what they're talking about.

You can use one or the other but not both at the same time. Here are a few things to consider. If you purchased the Norton with your system you probably have at least 1 year and possibly more that have already been paid for. If you did not then it's only a 90-day trial offer. Your MSN antivirus is free and if you choose to use this one you need to remove the Norton but, if you choose to use the Norton then do not load the free one from your ISP.
