Hi,
Follow these steps and check.
If the machine is on windows 8, then
a) If the system is on windows 8 then press Windows key + W, if its on windows 7 or vista, then type Devices and Printers in the search box.
b) Select Devices and Printer from the list.
c) Right-click on the device icon of the computer name and select “Bluetooth Device.”
d) In “Bluetooth Settings” window, check “Show the Bluetooth icon in the notification area”, and then click “OK.”
e) If the Bluetooth icon is still not found in the notification area, reinstall Bluetooth drivers and check.

thx for ur quick reply!!! sorry forgot to mention my system and OS. its a 3542 laptop and running win 8.1. the box has already been checked - “Show the Bluetooth icon in the notification area” there are 2 sets of drivers available for downloading to install drivers.for bluetooth on the product support page for my machine. obviously i would want the newest set. but did u mean to just uninstall the drivers in control panels and click search for drivers or what ever? i do remember there was a problem with blue tooth when i installed one of those packages from the support page. i didnt pay attention at the time bcoz i didnt have any blue tooth devices then.
sorry im going on and on here. my last thought was. everything is working, so why not just leave it alone.
