cannot get online after loading xp - missing drivers; wrong order?

i just loaded xp to my stepson's old dell dimension 8300. i came to the dell.com site to get the necessary drivers. got what i thought to be the correct ones. still cannot get online. still seeing "?" for "other devices" for ethernet, multimedia and a couple others. this occurred a few years ago, last time the hard drive went (gee, they don't last very long, do they?) but i'll be if i recall what i did. i know i had a hard time then, too, but i also invested a lot of time i do not have now. help!!!!!!!

Ok, let us get something straight here. THERE WAS NO PROFANITY IN MY LAST MESSAGE!!!!!!! THIS IS ABSURD! I think some of these message boards have gone entirely overboard. WAAAAAAY overboard. Yes, it is their right as a private entity to do as they see fit, I TOTALLY respect that, but let's get real... The word I used was BENIGN...in no way foul or profane language. I wouldn't do that on a public board. THAT SAID...

I hope you got my edited "profanity removed" message, Philip.

Just trying to get online at this point...all else is a go!

Thank you again for all of your help! I am very grateful!

Take care when connecting XP to the internet as its highly vulnerable now its at end of life. If you are stuck at the variants provide the hardware IDs. Instructions are here for newer versions of Windows but once you have opened the device manager the instructions should be similar:

NATAKUC4 - WOW! That is very comprehensive! Thanks! But why are there so many drivers? I've reloaded XP before - to the same unit - and never had to load so much stuff. Also, now that I already loaded some stuff, possibly in the wrong order because I didn't realize the chipset hadn't fully loaded until after I loaded the subsequent drivers at which point I went back and loaded it, do I have to remove the ones I loaded? If so, how? THANKS AGAIN! Really appreciate it...:-)

I've listed variants for the Modem, Ethernet and Video so there are more drivers listed than what you need. In order for me to know what variants you have I need the hardware IDs see page 71 of this pdf:

http://philipyip.files.wordpress.com/2013/01/legacy-windows-xp.pdf

Instructions here are for Vista, 7 and 8.1 but tell you what categories you are looking for in more detail:

http://dellwindowsreinstallationguide.com/downloading-drivers-checking-hardware-ids-and-downloading-and-installing-dell-system-drivers-in-the-correct-order/checking-hardware-ids-in-the-device-manager/

Installation of drivers in the incorrect order for Windows XP in particular Service Pack, Dell System Software, Chipset, Modem, Audio can sometimes cause Audio issues and may need a complete reinstall.

Microsoft .Net Framework is often needed for the Video drivers to load correctly.

You can of course try installing the video drivers to see how you get along.

Hello Philip,

I finally got around to checking the device manager as per your instructions. Here is what I found:

? Other Devices

?Ethernet Controller

?Ethernet Controller

?Multimedia Audio Controller

?Multimedia Audio Controller

?Video Controller (VGA Compatible)

When I right click as you instruct, and go to Properties, I get 3 tabs: General/Driver/Resources. When I click on Driver, it essentially tells me that there is no driver. Hence, there is no other info I can provide to you.

I have a list of drivers from the last time this occurred several years back. The Ethernet I have listed is R85255 (Broadcom Dr) BUT I also recall having a very hard time with this back then as well. I had gotten a message that I wrote down: Network Controller was detected but not able to be installed. Now, I don't know exactly what's wrong now, but my MAIN concern is getting online. As soon as I can do that, I can get updated drivers if I need them...right?

Also, here is a list of ALL drivers I used last time: (probably around 3 years ago):

Chipset (Intel) R114079

Video Controller R143248/R106547/R95342

Video Controller VGA R128346

PCI Modem R104087

Network Controller R155386 Intel Driver (and I have these 2 written there: R151519 and R85258)

Multimedia Audio Controller R99254

Communications R99998 and R 104088

Ethernet R85255

I know this is probably child's play for you but it's a royal pain for me. This pc has been down now for months. I know it's old, but it is only used for games and surfing the Net.

Please provide feedback.

THANK YOU!

Teresa

Philip...I just downloaded all the files you provided to my flash. So I'm ready with whatever of the files I need for when you respond. Also, I suspect I will have to do a complete reinstall of drivers? If so, how do I go about that? How do I remove the ones I already installed? Is this info in your manual? Thank you again! Teresa

It looks like you have everything for the system including variants. I guess last time you downloaded them you tried to install all variants of Network and Video. The ones that apply for your system will install and the ones that don't apply will fail to install. You can of course install in order.

I would install some OS Updates and Dell System Software before the drivers:

To find out the exact variants you can still look at the hardware IDs although no driver is installed. Essentially just ignore the driver tab and go to the details tab and select hardware IDs in the dropdown list

There are no DETAIL tabs for the drivers I'm missing as I stated in my last message. However, under PCI Modem Properties, there are 7 tabs. NONE of them is DETAILS but one is DIAGNOSTICS. Under DIAGNOSTICS, is Hardware ID, in this case PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_1080&SUBSYS_10001. This is NOT the case for all devices...only some have this tab. Under COMPUTER, there is ACPI Uniprocessor PC which has 2 tabs: DRIVER and GENERAL. Under DRIVER is all the driver info.

For the drivers I am missing, there is NO Hardware ID under ANY (of the, in this case, 3) tabs: GENERAL/DRIVER/RESOURCES. It's just not there - anywhere. SHOULD IT BE? I've looked and looked and looked...nothing.

So, with all this said, should I just download EVERYTHING you listed? AND do I have to wipe out everything I already did download?

Thank you!

Teresa

I don't have a Windows XP installation to hand as I am travelling these days, the device manager is slightly different in older versions of Windows.

In the meantime try installing, everything I mentioned and then everything you mentioned. You have all the drivers but some will fail as they don't apply to your system. After installation of all the drivers if you have an audio issue then its best to reinstall XP and reinstall in the order otherwise the system should perform properly.

Hi Philip,

Okay, well, I've gotten a bit further along after loading all of the drivers and sundry other software. Now, rather than 5 Device items, there are 3 remaining as follows:

? Ethernet Controller

? Multimedia Audio Controller

? Video Controller

The other good news is that I can now give you the Hardware ID's. The menus apparently updated with the new software. Here is that info:

Ethernet Controller:

PCI/VEN_11AB&DEV_1FAA&SUBSYS_613001385&REV_03 (that "613..." might be 6B...")

PCI/VEN_11AB&DEV_1FAA&SUBSYS_613001385

PCI/VEN_11AB&DEV_1FAA&CC_020000

PCI/VEN_11AB&DEV_1FAA&CC_0200

Multimedia Audio Controller:

PCI\VEN_1102&DEV_0004&SUBSYS_10031102&REV_04

PCI\VEN_1102&DEV_0004&SUBSYS_10031102

PCI\VEN_1102&DEV_0004&CC_040100

PCI\VEN_1102&DEV_0004&CC_0401

Video Controller:

PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_06E4&SUBSYS_QA5E19F1&REV_A1

PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_06E4&SUBSYS_QA5E19F1

PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_06E4&CC_030000

PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_06E4&CC_0300

I do not appear to have an audio issue as you mentioned (at least not one I know of) but rather I cannot get online. I have installed and reinstalled my (Linksys) wireless adapter a number of times. The software loads and the menu appears, but it is not populated with wireless networks and none of the buttons work, of course.

Can you help me from here?

Thank you much,

Teresa

From the hardware IDs I get the following:

Ethernet

This is non-standard for this model and probably custom installed. Note select the item is refurbished and you do not have the serial number (otherwise you will need to physically remove the card to get the serial number).

Audio

* I would install the Creative Driver directly, it should be more up to date than the Dell drivers. Select other products at the bottom, select Audigy and then legacy products. I can't give you the direct link as its changed the language to German as I am in Austria just now.

Thanks much, Philip!

Just one thing...what does this mean:

" I would install the Creative Driver directly, it should be more up to date than the Dell drivers. Select other products at the bottom, select Audigy and then legacy products."

I'm not nearly as tech-savvy as you! What does "install directly" mean? As opposed to what? And what do you mean by "select other products at the bottom"? Are you referring to Audigy and then legacy?

I know this is child's play to you, but I want to make sure I know what you are telling me to do. This project is making me want to scream! ;-)

The Creative drivers are the latest and should work the best however I listed the Dell drivers just in case. On the Creative support website there will be pictures of new products. You will need to select a link at the bottom saying older product or similar then select Augigy and then legacy to get the right driver.
