Have you looked at your modem properties and made sure the option that says idle time before hanging up is set to never? If you have XP got to start>connect to>show all connections. Click once on you dial-up connection ISP and then to the left side of the window select change settings of this connection. Then select options. But you could have other problems like needing a better driver, noisy phone line or maybe the ISP itself.

Yes, I made sure it is set at never. But I never even get a chance to be idle. Like all the other posts, I get disconnected after 1 to 5 minutes. I never even get a chance to get anything done on-line. One time I was lucky and was able to stay on for about 25 minutes. Earthlink had me add an initialization string in the modem settings. That didn't help. Also changed the dial-up speed to the lowest setting and that didn't help either. Made sure we had a new phone cord and no splitters. Uninstalled Norton and installed AVG. It is frustrating, because we never had this problem with our old desktop. I feel like this is not getting resolved and called Dell tonight to return my laptop. They were not happy about it, but are taking it back. I guess I will have to find another brand now. I have always liked our Dell computers, but now I am afraid to get another one.

kherb - how did you manage to get Dell to take it back, I told them I wanted to cancil my contract and send this laptop back because this is the third return and exchange and yet problem is still there. They told me I can not cancil my contract because it was past the 30 days so now I was stuck with it.

Even though I tried to explain that the reason why it was past the 30 days is because I trusted them in fixing the problem and spent over 2 months sending the laptop back to them and trying another, they even sent me another modem and said it should work - well it does not. I still get droppede after 5 minutes.

How did you cancil , was it before the 30 days or after ??

You can close the antivirus program and tell real fast if that has something to do with it. The modem is connection so it appears to work so sounds more like a driver problem for the modem. Have you also closed the firewall and see what happens? I may have missed it but please post what modem you have installed by physically looking at it. I was having a problem similar to this years ago and finally gave up on Dell and bought a 3com modem off ebay and that fixed my problem. But tell us the exact modem installed and maybe we can have a few more ideas for you.

Ok, all I can do is suggest that you get another modem like the 3com and you will resolve your problems. That is the modem I dealt with and it was never any good. You can find one, even a used one cheap off ebay or just order a new one. I don't think you will ever resolve this with that modem but that is just my opinion. I know getting the 3com and getting rid of this modem resolved my problems with it.

Man, I see Dell only shipped with this modem period. I may have to eat crow on this one. The 3com will work but you would have to use the driver from 3com site. But Vista may well have that driver and may not be needed. Have you D/L and installed this laterst driver for you modem off the Dell download site?

I see you have Vista so the card I was going to recommend may not work. May need a newer 3com modem than the one I had in mind. But take the modem out using the directions here and take it with you to where you can buy another one. Ask for a 3com brand and see what they can offer.
But I will do some research and try to find one to work and get back to you.

I was on the phone with dell when I received the newer different modem from them and they talked me through it over the phone but I do not remember updating the driver for it - will give that a try and see if it works - right now I am using my good old desktop with the internet. Will start up laptop later this morning and give that a try.

I know many people that have your modem and have had problems like yours. However, they have been used many times by several companies. Yes, make sure you update the driver and the instructions are on the D/L page so do it right by the instructions. As for the 3com I was going to suggest, I know it would work except not sure with Vista. But post the driver update results and I will be looking for a 3com that will work for you also.

ok I downloaded the upgrade driver you posted for the replacement modem I got and did it how they said to on their site and also disabled AVG firewall and enabled windows firewall to see if it works, now it is a waiting game to see if I get dropped or not. I will also try to disable windows firewall and enable AVG as well to see if that makes any difference. Now I will surf around and see - will let you know how it goes. Thanks a bunch

Will keep my fingers crossed. You should be able to run with the firewall and anti-virus on unless you ISP has a problem with it. You might also have to approve the connection in the firewall and or AVG program. But if you cannot stay connected find which one is the problem. Good luck!
