Linksys has an excellent tutorial on home network setup, as does HomeNetHelp.com.

Stubbs to do what you want to do, you will need to buy a router, easy to do, many are very cheap - what you want is a "gateway" (marketing hyperbole) - basically it is a NAT router with 4 switched 10/100 ports that has a WAN port to connect to either cable or DSL. You want a switched hub, not un-switched (life will be lots easier on your lan between your 2 PCs. There are lots of choices on these combo boxes  NetGear, LinkSys, D-link - to name some.  Prices range from 50-100 or so bucks.  To actually hook up your 2 computers, they each need a  NIC (network interface card), for ethernet 10/100. Your computers may already have such, but if not, these can be had very cheaply from 10 bucks on up. Then the third part naturally is the ethernet cable itself, cheaply bought from places like Radio Shack. What you want is category 5 shielded cable. You can buy them in about virtually any lenght you might need.

To make this work, - the above assumes you have an external DSL modem that connects via ethernet  and NOT USB. If you have an internal DSL modem on a card that is inside your PC, you will need to install a 2nd NIC card into that PC.  But lets keep this simple, your DLS modem is plugged into the wall or splitter,, you then will plug the router into the DSL modem, and then you plug your 2 computers into one of the 10/100 ports on that router.

All you need to do then typically is use your browser and point it to the router's IP address and do a very simple configuration  which typically is just entering in your userID account and password and you are set to go. The router then will handle the login and authentication and you then have an "always-on" DSL service.

Hope this gets you going conceptually.

Wired routers are now under $50.  Wireless are $50-$100.  If you look at this week's ads, there are "G" models selling for under $60 after rebate.
