how to change IP?

Question

have a 8200 dimension computer hooked up to a 4 port linksys router (befsr41) and hooked up to a cable modem. I need to change my ip due to I was trying to upload a file to an ftp and apparently I wasn't using the format to upload and kept getting a message access deni you might not have permission or something like that. Now this happen before but I went on vacation for a week and came back on with a different ip so I could connect. Now I tried to use the command 'ipcofig/release' and then 'ipconfig/renew' but this didn't change my ip. I think my router is going back to the old ip. Can someone offer some help

Have you tried unplugging the power from the modem, router, & computer and restarting all after a 30 second wait?

Access denied to an FTP server usually mean you are using a wrong username and/or password.  If the server is accepting anonymous connections, IP addresses should not matter, and if it did, you would get a message about a blocked IP address.  Usually, all IP addresses are accepted unless specifically denied.

well I did the power off thing but no help had all the right infor thanks but what I did was discconeted everything for a couple of days and my ip change. And now i have access to the fpt . Thanks for your help
