internet explorer wont connect

Ok i have a dell inspiron laptop, and i am having some internet issues. I have wireless internet and i have great signal where i usually have my computer (in my house). sometimes, internet explorer wont be able to connect to any pages, and it will say the internet is disconnected, but at the same time i am on AIM messaging my friends (so i must be connected to the internet). i can pull up the dell network assistant and test my internet connection, and it will say it is a fine connection, but the main screen on there will also say that the internet is disconnected at the time (even though i am messaging friends on AIM, i have 4 bars showing i have good wireless internet connectivity etc.)   any help?

Note that the Dell Network Assistant is only testing the connection to your router, so it is pretty useless when it comes to testing your connection to the internet.  The fact that you can connect with AIM, however, does indicate that you are connecting to the internet.  When you can't connect through Internet Explorer, is it just one web page or any web page?   How often does this problem occur?  It could be a problem with your ISP.  AIM uses different servers than and different ways of communicating than does IE.

Since you are able to chat with your friends through AIM it means that you are connected to the internet. Since you are not able to browse through websites what you could do is try to check for the settings in the internet explorer.First of all try typing different websites on the address bar of internet explorer and check if the websites are coming up. If the websites are not coming up then probably you could try downloading a different web browser like mozilla firefox and check if the web pages come up. If none of these steps work out tell the the ip address for the wireless network connection. To check for ip address first click on the start button, then click on run. In the run box type "CMD".Then click on ok button and then you would get a black screen. In the black screen type "ipconfig" then hit the enter button . If you are connected to the internet you would get a set of numbers next to ip address under wireless network connection. Also in that list you would find default gateway. If you get the defaulf gateway starting with 192 then follow this step. In the same black window type " ping " then leave a space and type in the default gateway address. Then hit enter and if you get four reply statements it shows that you are connected to your router. once you get the four reply statements type "ping" leave a space and type www.dell.com. If you get four replies again then it shows that you are connected to the internet. Try these steps and let me know what happens.
