"Internal Configuration is Inconsistent" screen reply when trying to use Dell Wireless LAN utility (1397 card) Windows 8

I have had significant problems getting the WLAN working after installing Windows 8 on this old Dell 1545 laptop. I have tried changing drivers to the Vista 32 with no joy. I contacted Dell and they want $130 plus tax to have their technician help with this issue. With refurbished laptops under $400, not a reasonable alternative.  Any suggestions?

Hi Bill,

The Dell Inspiron 1545 has compatible drivers for Windows XP, Windows Vista (32 and 64-bit) and Windows 7 (32 and 64-bit).

The Inspiron 1545 has not been tested for Windows 8, therefore you will not find Windows 8 drivers for your computer hence, you may be facing this issue.

You may access the available drivers for Windows XP, Vista and 7 for Inspiron 1545 by clicking on the link below.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

I understand that Dell does not support the use of Windows 8 with the machine that I have, however I am looking for solutions that will not require wiping the drive and starting over. Bill in Las Cruces

Hi Bill,

Thank you for your reply.

Since you have already tried to install the Vista drivers, please try and update the drivers for Windows 7.  Select 32-bit or 64-bit as per the version of Windows 8 you have on your computer.

The link for the drivers is:

Hope this resolves the issue. Another useful link for Windows 8 Support is:

Please reply if you have any further questions.

Thanks and regards,
