setting wireless network to connect to own router

I have a dlink 614+ wireless router and whenever i boot my machine, it shows 2 different wireless connections.  My Dlink plus its showing a linksys connection even though i do not own a linksys router.  My TM 1300 mini pci card always wants to connect to the linksys connection first and not my dlink router.  How do I tell the card to connect to my router and not the linksys connection?  I have no idea where this linksys connection is coming from

The Linksys is a neighbor's router.  If you can set connection settings in the wireless card driver's Advanced tab, it will try to connect there first.  If you can do it, put your SSID in.  The wireless utility for your card (not Windows Zero Configuration) should also be able to force it to your router.  As a last resort you could make your router's channel lower than your neighbor's router (with the default linksys SSID it is probably also on the default channel 6).

It sounds like there are a lot of unsecured networks and I am a proponenet of the WZC utility whihc will stop your machine from wandering.  I would also suggest you lock down your router by doing this:

  • Change the default SSID name to something unique
  • Disable the broadcast of that name
  • Enable MAC Filtering
  • And most imprtant, enable WEP or WPA depending on your situation

This is a very comprehensive article;
