trying to network Studio XPS 435T/DSL wireless modem with Dell 8250/TrueMobile 1180 USB adapter

I recently purchased Dell XPS 435T running Windows 7 and have it hooked to a Verizon DSL/wirelessl modem (ActiontecGT704WGB).  DSL intenet connection works well.  So I decided to network my old computer (Dell 8250 running Win XP) using an old Dell TrueMobile 1180 (firmware 1.5.3.0).  I ran the 1180 installation as described (install software, then hook up USB adapter).  When I run the Client Manager, the Wireless Network tab says "Windows is currently managing this adapter.  To configure this adapter, run the Network Connection Properties."  So I open Network connections and see a red X on the Wireless Network Connection for TrueMobile 1180.  I right click and choose View Available Networks and get the message, "Windows cannot configure this wireless adapter.  If you have enabled another program to manage this connection, use that software."  So each program is pointing a finger at the other.  What can I do to get the Client Manager to work and to detect the wireless signal from the Verizon router?  Or does Windows XP have some similar inherent program that will do the same thing?  Any way to resolve this confilcit?

Thanks

Update on the above: On the XP computer,  I uninstalled TrueMobile 1180, rebooted, and let Windows find the drivers for the adapter from the CD.  I then used Wireless Zero Configuration service.  Under Wireless Networks, I can now see my wireless modem and its name, along with a strong signal strength.  However I can't connect to it.  I entered the WEP key manually but this did not help.  Very frustrating to get this far but still not connect.  Any ideas?

Thanks

Second update:  The first problem to solve is to get the TrueMobile 1180 to connect to the wireless modem.  I have been unable to use the TrueMobile Client Manager, it always says that Windows is managing the adapter even with Wireless Zero diabled and software installed under Safe Mode.  The only time I can see the modem is by not installing the Client Manager and to use WZC.  But it will not connect.  I've tried several Repair commands and I've tried entering the modem IP address in the TCP/IP properties, but nothing works.  I just get the message "waiting on the network" and then it just ends with no connection.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.
