zip files

Hi, I am not sure if I am in the right area for this question but here goes.  I am an accounting student & trying to open a file from Prentice Hall for my class.  When I think on the file that I need the window comes up "Open, Save, Cancel".  I click open and then get a message back that my COMPRESSED ZIP FILE invalid or corrupt/damaged.

I don't know the first thing about ZIP let alone where to look.  Can someone please help?  I need to get this file into my computer asap.
Thanks in advance. Kim

Are you running Windows XP?  If so, Windows XP can open zip files automatically.  If it can't then the file is indeed corrupt.  Try downloading that file again.  If there is something wrong with the file, then it will be impossible to open it.

Hi there...

Another way of opening/uncompressing a "zip" file would be to use "WinZip" - it's a free to use (software). All you've got to do is download & install.

All you need is WinZip 10.

tip:when you get the software to run you may come across the three button menu
just pick "use evaluation version" everytime. (menu box when/before winzip opens)

Best of luck on your studies... Enjoy

1) winzip is terrible over-priced software with annoying pop-ups ...  use it only if you need to -- like, if for instance, someone is sending you a zip file made by winzip10's new proprietary format.

2) if you need a stand-alone compression program, look to something free like 7-zip

3) lastly, if the file is corrupt and you desperately need part of it, there are a variety of repair utilities online. I've had decent luck with the repair utility in winrar (rarlabs.com).  It's especially good if you only have a partial zip file and want to extract as many files as possible.
