Computer will not boot

I am on my second Dell 5100 and nothing happens when I try to turn it on. I have checked the obvious - it is connected to the power supply and the mains switch is in the on position. The same thing happened to me with my previous Dell 5100. That time I was told the power supply was not working and the fitting of a new item cured the problem for a while. Then when the thing stopped working until I was told my motherboard got fried! Assuming that the power supply is the problem, how can I find out the correct power supply to replace the current (hopefully dud) item?  Will putting in a power supply with too high a rating cause problems?

Hi, Pisicuta:

Are you seeing a blinking amber light on the power button? Try unplugging the system, hold the power button for a couple seconds, then plug it back in and try to start it up.

Hi Osprey4,

Did as you suggested and still nothing. The only light that can be seen is the green light on the motherboard.

Further to the above and some time later.... I bit the bullet and went to my local PC repair shop. Yes it was the Power Supply Unit (PSU) and luckily they had another dead Dell computer with a suitable PSU. Now up and running again.

The dim 5100/E510 models were prone to PSU problems. Glad to hear you've got it solved.
