Did I make a mistake?

I decided to order a desktop from Dell (fingers are crossed my order isn't delayed). After my order was placed I happen to stumble on a benchmark of the Intel i7 processor against the Q9550, which I ordered. Most of the results seemed to favor the i7 processor. Below is a complete order list of the system I built. Did I make a mistake with going with the Q9550 over an i7 processor ?

1 Intel® Core™ 2 Quad processor Q9550 (12MB L2, 2.83GHz, 1333FSB)
1 6GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 800MHz - 4DIMMs
1 Dell Consumer Multimedia Keyboard and Laser Mouse
1 22" Dell ST2210 Full HD Widescreen Monitor
1 ATI Radeon HD 4350 512MB
1 640GB Serial ATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) w/DataBurst Cache™
1 Dell 19 in 1 Media Card Reader
1 Genuine Windows® 7 Home Premium, 64bit, English
1 Mouse included with Keyboard purchase
1 Integrated 10/1000 Ethernet
1 No Modem Option
1 Adobe® Acrobat® Reader 9.0 Multi-Language
1 16X DVD+/-RW Drive
1 Integrated 7.1 Channel Audio
1 No Speaker Option
1 Dell 1505 Wireless-N PCIe Card
1 Microsoft® Works 9
1 McAfee SecurityCenter, 15-Months
1 2 Year Basic Service Plan
1 WildTangent Games

Hi, TheExoticFish:

That's a very capable system and I'm sure you'll be quite happy with it.

Good luck with the new computer!

Looks good to me, but personally I would have gone for the i7 processor.   :emotion-5:

I haven't had a desktop in years (always use a laptop) and actually have never purchased a "build to order" PC before.  Is there a reason why I should have chosen one over the other, money not being one of them ? Put my mind at ease please. LoL

TheExoticFish,

I see a few issues with the i7 processor at the present time. So you may have made to correct decision.

i7 is the new kid on the block, first all-new architecture from Intel since the Pentium 4 back in the 90's.  Now, this means that they don't know how it will be in the long term.  Think new car syndrome, never buy a car the first model year it comes out, that is the year they find all of the bugs in it.  I'd wait until the 3rd gen i7's before I migrate.  Your CPU, on the other hand, is a seasoned veteren, we know how it will perform under all circumstances, as it is based on the proven, tried and true P3 architecture.  You made the right choice if you want to make absolutely sure that you will have a solid performing machine for the next 5-10 years with the least amount of problems.

Hello! Add to what everyone else has said, from what I've read, the I7 is a quad core processor with memory management and other features on the chip itself instead of on a seperate chip.  It is supposed to improve memory management and cache management which is a good thing, however your talking about miliseconds of improvement which you wont notice unless your a robot or something ;-) I think you have a great system comming in!

Okay, good to know. I'm still praying that my order ships on time and isn't delayed. It's a Studio Slim Desktop.
