Dwayne37,
Click on Network and Sharing Center. In the left pane, click on Manage connections. Is the Local Area Connection enabled or disabled? Also, if you go into Device Manager, is the Local Area Connection device listed under Network Adapters?

Right before I joined the community, I did go into the device manager and I uninstalled the broadcom network adapter and I resarted my computer but that did not fix the problem / I also tried to update but there was a message that said the system has the latest update for the driver/

Dwayne,
Let's try resetting TCP/IP:
Please follow these steps:
1) Click on Start button.
2) Type Cmd
3) Right click on the cmd.exe and select Run as Administrator
4) At the Command Prompt, type:
netsh int ip reset
4) Press the Enter key.
5) Restart the computer.
If this doesn't fix the problem, then you can go to Device Manager, Uninstall the Broadcom Network Adapter, Restart the computer, and let Windows reinstall the Broadcom NIC.

Dwayne,
Yep. I'm still here. I've been working with a client on his DVD drive not being seen in Vista. Got it working. Back to your problem.
If you go into Device Manager, does it show the Broadcom Network Adapter now? Is there any indication of a problem? For example, does it show a red X or yellow circle with exclamation mark? Under Properties, does it say the item is working?

Dwayne,
Sorry about the delay. I was playing around with some settings in my profile, and turned off notifications of replies to my posts. Question? Have you recently reinstalled your Operating System. It sounds as if the on-board chipset is not communicating with the network interface.
Have you tried running the Dell Driver Reset Tool?

No I haven't reinstalled my operating system, but I agree that something is not communicating properly. I have One care installed (Trial for the past 89 days) / A linksys wireless router / that is it / but both of my computer were able to access the internet wireless and through the ethernet cable / my inspiron e1705 xp is 2years old / I take the same ethernet cable out of the xp & plug it into my inspiron e1705 running vista & I get a wired connection ? I think I have tried the dell rest tool but not really sure / how do I reset to make sure ? Thanks Tony
