Problem using the Community forums

During the last few days, I have been unable to login to the forums. When I try to login the message is, "We are sorry but there seems to be a problem. Please try again after some time.". I changed the password and still couldn't login. For some reason I could login later. I can't give kudos or edit a post I just created. I'm using Firefox version 68.0.1 (64-bit), Mozilla Firefox for Ubuntu 1.0. Any ideas why this forum is not being friendly for me ?

Hmm, so after U2CAMEB4ME advised to click the 3 dots menu, if I view the thread here, I see my original post and six replies. But only the first post has the 3 dots menu?

@jehoshuaYeah giving Kudo doesn't work most of the time either. I once managed to give one to someone using my usual browser (Firefox), no idea what made that mouse click special at that time.

That and among other the fact that you can't even upload your own avatar makes this community somewhat ridiculous.

Concerning the Kudos: Giving Kudos only seems to work for me for the original post, not for any replies to it.

@robert pHey, while you're at it, could you let the admins know that Dell DNS is setup incorrectly as multiple people have stated (not only in this thread, which was IMHO incorrectly merged with other threads as the problems (browser vs. email notifications) are not the same at all):

https://www.dell.com/community/New-to-Dell-Community/No-email-notifications-because-of-illegal-sender-domain/m-p/7251277

https://www.dell.com/community/Dell-OpenManage-Enterprise/OFF-TOPIC-Community-board-using-wrong-sender-address/m-p/6190241

I don't think people should have to modify their email infrastructure including spam filters if the root cause of the problem is Dell DNS.

Have a great day!

@jammac  Thanks for your replies. I agree with what you are saying.

One problem when people can't login to the forums is that they are unable to advise of the problem.  When I couldn't login at all, I did eventually contact Dell customer support by email, and all the community based email eventually said was to try the "lost password" function.

But, that's not the problem.

How many community members are there, who have registered and now can't login for some reason ? Unknown of course.

Ok, there are multiple problems here, too bad this thread was merged with others, so overview got completely lost.

Concerning the Kudos bug: It seems that only the first post on each page works for giving Kudos. Also the three dots only display on the first message on each page.

The dropdown link is there but the containing

has a class of lia-js-hidden, probably meaning it doesn't display. Why, we don't know. Probably noone will ever know

@jammac  - Yes I agree, it is a pity that a number of problems/issues were merged.

When I read the comment about the dropdown link and the java class, it prompted me to do a 'Nu HTML Checker" at https://validator.w3.org on just this page ( https://www.dell.com/community/New-to-Dell-Community/Problem-using-the-Community-forums/td-p/7347236/page/3 ) and it returned 103 errors. Some were warnings but most were errors.

For some reason I have been able to login with Firefox, but it seems only if I first browse a few pages on the Community first.

Hi jammac,

The Forum Administrators and IT are continuing to look into ths.

Thanks for pointing out those other posts, however there has been several upgrades and improvements since those posts were made almost a year ago.

jehoshua,

The Forum Administrator and Dell IT are working this issue.  They have attempted to replicate the issues you are having and have not been able to using Firefox version 68.0.2 (64-bit).  The email notification issue has been reported to the platform's tech support.

Just as a test, I'll send you a notification for a private message, so be sure to check for it.  Thanks.

In any case, thanks for taking this seriously. I'm sure lots of people stay away from the community after futile attempts at participating because it just "does not work" [tm] as they are used to a community working. That can't be the goal.

As far as Kudos are concerned, there seems to be activity at https://www.dell.com/community/New-to-Dell-Community/Kudos-doesn-t-show/m-p/7357861. Alas, it has not yet been resolved.

(Actually it was me using FF 68.0.2, not sure what @jehoshua is using)

Also it would be great if we could use personal avatars. That is the least a community should allow...

@jammac  -  Yes I agree, most people couldn't be bothered pursuing with some problems, and if it is a login problem, then who do they contact ?

I'm using FF 68.0.2 also

I possibly narrowed down the login bug/problem today.

If I close Firefox (cookies get removed), and then re-open and go straight to the login page, I get the message "We are sorry but there seems to be a problem. Please try again after some time..".

But if I browse the community forums first, and then login, it is a successful login. Using FF 68.0.2

I must admit I haven't had problems with authentication.

Concerning the other problems, I have noticed that I can give Kudos and also see the three dots on my mobile phone (Android Pie). Is that using Chrome? I don't even know. So it must be browser related after all?

However I see no errors in the Web/Javascript console when using Firefox...

I logged into the HP Community forums with the same browser, just wondering if they use Lithium software. Yes, they sure do, and ...

I can give Kudos and I can see the 3 dots.

Had a quick look and couldn't see what version of Lithium they are running. I assume these days it is better not to display the version number.

Thanks jehoshua,

I'm forwarding all these comments to the Platform Admin and Dell IT department.  They've opened a trouble ticket with the vendor, hopefully with this new information they can resolve it.
