Is there an easy way to transfer files from a Dell Desktop XP system to a Dell 1525 laptop Vista system?

You could connect the desktop's hard drive in a external power USB 2.0 powered adaptor, similar to to the unit shown here,
 
 
 
 
 
 
Depending on the size of the files, you could also use a USB 2.0 flash drive.

I purchased the "Belkin Easy Transfer Cable for Windows Vista"  It allows the user to transfer XP files to the new Vista computer.  Very user friendly
