DVD ROM Firmware issue
OptiPlex 780
The PLDS DVD ROM DS-8D3SH ATA drive has lost it's ability to burn CDs and DVDs. The issue seems to be corruption somewhere in the firmware. I have downloaded the SD3_HD12 firmware package, but Windows 7 pro won't let me do the install because the same version of the firmware is already resident on the hard drive. What files do I need to delete in order to do a clean install of the firmware?

I don't know how old your DVD burner is, but it's not too unusual for the laser to die. Or does it still play CD's/DVD's?
If reinstalling the firmware doesn't give you the delete option when it's already there, then I'm not sure how you'd delete it. It would have to be in Control Panel > Programs.
If it helps, I've used Nero12 for some years for CD/DVD burning. Never any issues. Only exception was when an LG internal burner completely died.

More likely the dvd drive died.
Replacements are not expensive.
