In the Optiplex 745 any processor with the following characteristics it will be compatible:

- LGA755

- 1066 Mhz

The intel xeon x3230 is from socket lga 755. No need to adapt. It is fully compatible.

Thanks for answering.  I take it the X3230 doesn't have integrated graphics.  Did you add a GPU card?

The motherboard has an internal gpu. The processors of the lga 755 do not have their own gpu. It is recommended to put a gpu. The internal is very old.

if you want to install a graphics card, the mini tower and desktop models will take full height; the mini and sff take either a half height or you'll need an adapter

besides better performance, a graphics card will enable you to use dvi or hdmi, and possibly dp port

it's the next best thing, which is good enough.  plus, it runs at 65 tdw, so it is more energy efficient than a q6700

if it came with a celeron processor, and i had to upgrade, i'd go with the q6700, but will not upgrade this cpu

the one thing i will do is to put new thermal paste on the next time i open it up

brad the tech nut is pretty much spot on.  a vidio card with give you dvi, hdmi, and dp capabilities.  memory upgrade, i purchased from memory4less (give me a couple of weeks if you want feedback/updat on that).  mx linux rocks on this system.  if you're not windows gaming, and as others have pointed out, this isn't the optimal gaming pc, you can't go wrong with mx.  as i said in another post - it's flawless

btw, i always upgrade my equipment to the max until i have no other choice, then i go bleeding edge, which will last me another decade or so

The intel core 2 qx6800 according to the intel is compatible. As I said, any processor that has 1066Mhz / Socket 755, will be compatible with the Optiplex 745. I can confirm that the intel core 2 quad q6660, q6700 and xeon x3230 (theoretically the most powerful) work without problems.

Although this discussion is over 3 years old, I am leaving my response here, as a Google search brought me here and helped me with the restoration of an old Optiplex 745 that was my mother's and had been given up for dead years ago. 

The Xeon X3230 works perfectly on the socket without modification, I got it cheap. Also the DDR2 RAM is cheap, almost a dollar a Gb and I could put 8 Gb on the board without much problem, you just have to find the right order to put the ram modules in the slots, as they do not work in any order, but it is a matter of testing. 

So here I leave the data in case anyone is doing restoration of their old machines in 2024. 

By the way, also say that I don't know if the X3230 has integrated graphics. For my computer I bought a low profile ATI Radeon HD5450 graphics card, which has a 1Gb RAM, works great and cost me 22€.

Me imagino que si te cabe la gt620, no tendrías por qué tener problemas.
