Dell Optiplex 760 Memory and Processor Upgrade
Hello, I have a dell Optiplex 760 small form factor (sff) which has an Intel Core 2 Duo and 2Gb ram.
I was wondering if:
1. Is it possible to upgrade to 8Gb ram?
2. Is it possible to upgrade to any Intel Core 2 Quad processor?
The service tag number of the Optiplex 760 computer is: .
Thanks in advance and have a nice day
Best regards,
Miguel.

The Optiplex 760MT and SFF uses two motherboards -
T674K Non-Quad core CPU motherboard
U562N Quad core CPU motherboard
If you have the 1st one you cannot use a quad core CPU on it.
SFF power supply is too small to support 95W processor.

Optiplex 760 Tech Guide
Yes, your 760 SFF can take a quad. Just the USFF can't. Please see tech guide and search using "processor," or pg. 9. For RAM, search using "memory." And yes, it can take 8GB.
IMPORTANT EDIT: I momentarily forgot about the MB-CPU thing. To find out which MB you have, there's a sticker by the CMOS battery. Check the P/N #.

And yes, you can install 8GB RAM.
I do remember running into a spec sheet for the UK version of the 760. It could only take the core 2 duo's.
If your MB can only take a duo, all is not lost. Often, increasing RAM and having the OS on an SSD makes a more noticeable difference.
Images below are from UK version of spec sheet:

That advice is bad advice and in specific cases totally wrong.
ONLY M863N motherboard for 760 SFF supports quads.
@DELL-Chris M can verify this.
There are multiple versions of the board for MT DT SFF and NOT ALL support quads.

Yes, you can use a quad up to the Core 2 Quad Q9650.
You have an MB part number that is said by Dell-Chris M, Community Manager, moderator, and Dell employee, can take a quad. According to the part numbers speedstep gave, green text meant it can take a quad and red text meant it can't.
The "0" (zero) at the beginning of the part number is often skipped.

We're almost going in circles here. I already linked the Optiplex 760 Tech Guide. It lists the quad core CPU's your 760 can take.
I said "up to a Q9650," not that it's the "only."
And yes, your 760 can take the CPU's you mentioned. The 760 doesn't take any quad for any PC, just the ones listed in the Tech Guide.
Your MB will automatically detect the CPU. After first start and auto detection, it'll require a restart.

Hello,
My computer is Optiplex 760 (no MT version)
I don´t have installed another version of motherboard.
This is the whole list of components installed.
With the following next information. Is it possible to confirm that I can install 8Gb of RAM and a Core Quad processor?

After reading the technical guide, I confirm my computer is a DESKTOP COMPUTER (DT) version (is not a USFF version as I told previously).
According to the page 9 the motherboard should be compatible with those quad core processor only:
Intel® Core™ 2 Quad Q9650/3.00GHz, 12M, 1333FSB
Intel® Core™ 2 Quad Q9550/2.83GHz, 12M, 1333FSB
It´s so strange because my desktop version is supplied with core2duo e7400 model and the compatibility table shows this processor is not supported.
Can you confirm can I install an quad core processor in my computer?
Thanks again.

@miguel_martin,
Sorry, the info you pasted above doesn't help me any. I'll have an image below of an example of an MB #.
Dell didn't bother to document which 760 MB's could take quads. This has relied on the knowledge of other users, or moderators/Dell employees. What is your MB model #? It's not giving away any personal info. Then may be speedstep, or another, will have an idea if it can take a quad or not.
Image will show once approved by a moderator:

It's a DT, not SFF.
Images, @LINKS, tables (except for text), and colors for text don't show while signed in using Android. Android gets a watered down version of Dell Community site. To see those things, I have to sign out and use back arrow.

I removed the cover from the computer but the cmos battery is not visible.
I´ll try to locate it and make a photo to share it here.
Thanks again for your help!

My computer is a Dell Optiplex 760 DT and the motherboard version is 0M863N according to the sticker near the CMOS battery.
¿Is it possible to upgrade my core 2 duo processor for a quad core processor?
Thank you!
