Dell Optiplex 990 DT Upgrade
Hi,
Two years ago, I installed a new 2GB GeForce GT 1030 Silent Low Profile in my Dell Optiplex 990 DT. So far it's working perfectly, but as most of you know this GPU can't run most of the new games. So I'm thinking about buying a GTX 1050 (which is much better that what I currently have), A new ATX case, and a new PSU.
I won't get a low profile GTX 1050/1050 Ti because I'd still have to upgrade the PSU which isn't possible because of the case size.
My question is: Is it possible to switch from the Desktop case to an ATX case and do the upgrade? If yes then could you suggest me a good case and a PSU? I've been told that some cheap PSU's are worse than what came with the pc originally. Even if it has a higher wattage.
Or if you think there's a better upgrade for a small price gap then let me know about it!
My current specs:
- i5-2500 3.3GHz
- 8GB ram
- GT 1030 Silent Low Profile 2GB
- Windows 7 Professional SP1
- Standard Optiplex 990 DT PSU (255W)
Regards,
Aziz

The GTX 1050 Ti works in SFF models and should also work in your DT.

It is possible to upgrade small psu to 400W in your DT. It is also possible to switch to (mini)tower ATX case. https://www.dell.com/community/Optiplex-Desktops/upgrade-of-Optiplex-390-790-990-Desktop-DT-small-psu-to-400W/td-p/7536981
It is probably easier to stay w DT case than to switch case because of need to reverse engineer Dell front panel connector on motherboard.
If you do want to take up the challenge to switch case, do get a good quality name brand psu and do not get a cheap brand. Dell OEM 460 W psu for XPS Desktop is not bad either.

Thanks for the reply!
Unfortunately I can't get that small 400W PSU because shipping it to where I live is nearly 6x it's price, and most of the reviews tell that it's extremely loud.
I think I'll keep looking for a good case and a psu for now.

ok good to know it does not work for everyone I will remember its downside next time I recommend it.
this (and other community) link may hopefully help you work on front panel pin out when you get there.

I'll make sure to use that method once I get the new case. Thanks!

Alright, so I guess I only have to get a GTX 1050 ti.
The model is D05D, and the size is (4 in, 16.1 in, 14.2 in) (Width, Depth, Height).
Thanks!
