The current specs "specifications"Are this:

Core 2 QUAD q6600 8 gb ddr2 ram default 305 watt power supply

And 80 gigabyte hard drive.

I want to find a good graphics card maybe even the best it can handle.

I Mostly want to know how to identify if a Graphics card can be supported by the dell optiplex 745 Mini tower.

If you cant tell me how to identify if a card is compatible may you recommend a card.

INTEL Radeon HD 1000 2000 3000 4000 5000 6000 7000 8000 series work fine.

NONE of the Radeon R series work at all.

Most NVIDIA Geforce 610 730 745 etc work fine as well as the newer Pascal based cards.  HOWEVER the video card slot is only 1 slot wide so ANY dual slot cards do not fit.  This limits you to 75W cards up to and including Zotac GTX 1050TI Mini.

Lowest end card I would recommend is Gigabyte GDDR5 GT 1030.

For Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 17.04, Ubuntu 17.10, the new driver has been made into the Proprietary GPU Drivers PPA.
How to Install NVIDIA 384.59 in Ubuntu:
It’s NOT recommended to install these proprietary divers for beginners. It may cause issues and break your system. You MUST know how to restore your system before getting started.

For Ubuntu 14.04, Ubuntu 16.04, Ubuntu 17.04, Ubuntu 17.10, the new driver has been made into the Proprietary GPU Drivers PPA.

1. Open terminal (Ctrl+Alt+T) and run command to add the PPA:

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:graphics-drivers/ppa && sudo apt update

Nvidia Driver PPA

2. Then you’re able to install the driver via Additional Drivers utility.
For some devices, there may be a black screen issue after installing NVIDIA proprietary GPU drivers. It can be fixed either by setting NOMODESET in grub option, or removing the proprietary driver via command:

sudo apt-get purge nvidia*

You may need to boot into recovery mode -> root prompt, or press Ctrl+Alt+F1 on login screen to get into command console.
