What you did is not an accepted practice. Some holes are not so easy to dig out-of.

Before the drive was moved, there should have been a full-backup and/or image done on the machine. It would be trivial to retrieve the shortcuts from the User/Desktop folder.

Your Internet bookmarks/favorites should be in the cloud if using a Microsoft-Account, (Chromium) Edge, or Google Chrome. I believe they also could have been exported to a file before-hand.

Re: recently swapped my SSD from my Dell Vostro into a Dell 9020 desktop and loaded a new version of Windows 10.

like JOcean said if you did a clean install of new Windows 10 on ssd after swap, none of the old settings like applications, shortcuts or bookmarks would be saved.

If you want to keep those, assuming you had older Windows 10, do not load a new version of OS after swap ssd from one pc to another.  Just let the older Windows 10 auto update after swap.

The only way your files and settings would transfer is if you do a clone from the old drive to the new one. If you loaded a new version of Windows (did you mean a clean install) then that wipes everything out and installs a clean version of the OS without any previous files and settings. However when you install Windows you are given the option of saving files and settings during the install, an option you may not have selected.

Do you still have the old drive, if so then you could do a clone otherwise when you installed Windows it creates partitions that would wipe the settings and files.

Thanks for the reply. No I dont as I didnt think I could just swap the SSD into another PC and use the same Windows that was on it so I bought and loaded a  nw Windows 10 onto the same SSD and fitted that into the new PC.Sounds like I made a stupid ,costly mistake.
