OptiPlex 980, Intel 82578DM NIC, speed issues

Hello, I can have the internet connection speed of only 40mbps max (ISP declared speed is 500mbps) with wired connection but not wifi. My network card (Intel 82578DM) supports 1gbps. I can choose 1 gbps from drop-down menu but if I confirm it at 1mbps the internet connection is lost. I thought it is limited by BIOS but can't find anything about the speed limitation. I have Dell OptiPlex 980 with Win 10. Please help me to fix the issue.

Hi Alex5908,

When did you first notice the issue? Did it coincide with any hardware or software changes on your PC or network? How are you measuring the connection speed?

You should try leaving the NIC speed setting at Auto. That way the NIC and the router negotiate the speed that is optimal for both of them.

Do you have any other devices connected to the router by LAN cable? If you do, does the speed change if you disconnect them? What is the connection speed of other devices like (if applicable)?

What version of NIC driver is installed?

If you could let us know, thanks.

To get 1000mbs connection, networking gear on both ends must be 1000mbs capable. Also, if the wire-run is fairly long, you have to have CAT-6 or better cables. The little LEDs on card and/or Switch usually indicate what link-speed it negotiated.

On the machine, be sure proper driver is loaded. Be sure it's not in ECO-Mode (lame ... drops down slower to save power). If using only (long) CAT-5e cables, might be better to lock it as 100mbs (still, very fast).
