Optiplex 3010 Windows XP does not detect audio adapter

Hi all.

I have acquired an Optiplex 3010 i5-3450 MT to replace a Lattitude D600, which has joined the Choir Invisible (nudge, nudge, wink, wink)

Under Windows XP Professional 32 bit SP2 the Conexant CX20641/CX20651 High Definition Audio Driver from the Dell Drivers library does not detect the audio device and halts the driver install.  Under Windows 7 Professional 64 bit the same driver does detect the audio device and successfully installs the driver whereupon the system doth maketh joyous sounds.  Can anyone suggest appropriate kung fu to resolve this issue?

Thx

Ian, retired computer dude

Install (or reinstall) the Intel Chipset drivers, then try that Dell sound driver.

We used to see problems in the Win XP days like this because of needed chipset drivers.

In general the newer Windows OS the easier it is installing device driver automatically.  In XP you may need to manually select a driver from Dell support to try and may run into error, Win 10 will likely search and find what it thinks the best driver for your device without you lifting a finger. Win 7 being newer than XP but older than Win 10 will do much better than XP in locating/installing driver on its own but sometimes still needs a little manual help.  There is nothing special of a Dell driver for audio, and in general Windows can find equally good or better working driver.

Make an updated Windows XP Reinstallation DVD which slipstreams the XP Service Pack 3 and the Dell Driver cab. I done this the other day with an OptiPlex 790, the procedure should be identical with an OptiPlex 3010:
