Optiplex 3020: Should I update BIOS before upgrading from Windows 7 to Windows 10?

I've been cleaning up stuff and checking for updates as I slowly prepare to upgrade my old Optiplex 3020 from Windows 7 to Windows 10.

When I check here for driver updates, I see that there's an urgent BIOS update, Version: A20, A20, Release date: 19 Jun 2019.

My computer's current BIOS version is Dell Inc. A02, 1/7/2014.

Should I just not mess with the BIOS, or should I update it? (And if I update it, is it okay to go straight from A02 to A20?)

definitely do bios update to max with 7

Run as administrator.

which bios depends on the model

Micro  Dell OptiPlex 3020M System BIOS

USFF Desktop Tower AIO

Computers with Skylake chipsets require special driver support for bios updates.

All the drivers other than bios are in a cab file

Use 7zip to extract contents of the cab file in the my documents folder.

Thanks for the advice to update my BIOS--I did it!

You didn't answer my question about whether or not I could go straight to A20 from A02, but looking at some other Q&As, I decided to play it safe and install every single older BIOS update, step by step (A03, then A05 (since there was no A04), then A06...). It was a little tedious, but it went smoothly, and my BIOS is now A20 and the computer seems fine.

Your information about the different models and the Skylake Chipset stuff was kind of overwhelming (and I turned out not to need it), but I appreciate your trying to cover all the bases since you didn't know all the specifics of my computer.

How I figured out whether or not I had Skylake

  1. Did "Run" and "msinfo32", where I learned that my processor was Intel Core i5-4570.
  2. Googling, I found this Intel page, listing all the "Products formerly Skylake," and i5-4570 was NOT listed on it.
  3. I wasn't sure if that was definitive proof, so I did a search for "i5-4570" on the Intel site, and this Processor Specifications page told me that the Code name was "Products formerly Haswell"--so, NOT Skylake.

I know this is an old post. For the record, I had A03 and just went straight to A20. No issues found.
