Optiplex 7010 memory / internal graphics problem
Hello,
I have a Dell Optiplex 7010 with strange behaviour:
System Setup: BIOS Version A08, 4x 4GB = 16GB total RAM, internal Graphics, i5-3470
Because it was a used computer with old A08 BIOS and unknown BIOS password set, I cleared the password and reset the NVRAM as described in DELL manual (Jumper moved from PASS_WD to RTC_CLR, powered, ...)
After that, the internal graphic doesn't work anymore. When I install a Graphics Card in PCIe socket, graphics is fine, there are no issues.
In addition, only 8GB RAM are recognized, though 4 modules are populated; DIMM3 & DIMM4 are reported empty. When I remove RAM from DIMM1 and DIMM2, the system reports DIMM1 & DIMM2 empty (which is correct) but now, DIMM3 and DIMM4 are recognized as 8GB RAM.
I'm sure that no RAM modules are defective. CMOS Lithium Battery is also new.
Flashing to newest BIOS version A29, downgrading to A05 and upgrading to A29 again, etc. doesn't fix this behaviour.
Any ideas?
Best regards,
Ralf

You stated that flashed back to an older BIOS then flashed up again. Did you try the system after you flashed to the old BIOS and did the problems clear up? Also problems can occur if you flash from an old version directly to a newest version. Try updating the BIOS in steps, one version to the next available version and see if that helps.

You cannot mix ranks and speed for ram.
It must be compatible.
High Density non compatible ram will act this way.
Ram is installed in pairs that are interleaved.
1 3 THEN 2 4 NOT 1 2 3 4
Installing a card disables the onboard INTEL graphics.

Now I am curious, what speed and type are the RAM modules? Speedstep is spot on about mixing and matching but could you post the type and speed you are using?

I have the same exact problem. I use four monitors, so I was using the internal graphics card plus a PCI one. I have 16GB installed. One day I woke up and the computer had restarted but, since the CMOS battery was out, it asked to change the BIOS so that the multi-display option was enabled. After that moment, I haven't being able to use the internal graphics card, and half of the 16GB are gone. Like Ralf said, there are no issues with the DIMMs. I've been working with them for at least a few years.
I updated the BIOS to A29, and got the internal graphics card to show in the "Primary display" option, however, it is still not working. Can't get any image except from the PCI card. And the memory is the same, only seeing 8GB.
Any ideas how to solve this?... I don't think it's a hardware problem.
