Hi. I have an old Dell optiplex 780. I would like to upgrade it. But I don't know what graphics card does it needs

Characteristics :

Intel 2 core quad q9400 2.66ghz

Ram memory ddr3

Power supply 300 W

Motherboard (I have no idea)

Can someone tell me what graphics card does it needs?

Hi @Angelito01 ,

Optiplex 780 do not need an add-on graphic card while it contains on-board display. The actual question should be: What do you need?

If you need your 780 for:

  • General documentation work and web browsing - No need upgrade GPU as no big difference.
  • Multimedia task like audio/video editing or graphic design - No need upgrade GPU, buy a modern PC instead.
  • General gaming with limited GPU requirement - You may check out UserBenchmark: Dell OptiPlex 780 Compatible Builds to see what GPU works with 780 and then choose one as per your budget.
  • Top hit 3D gaming like "WINNER WINNER, CHICKEN DINNER" or BattleField V - Forget about it! No way to get them work on a Core2 PC.

Beware on what you're planning to spend for. For example, cost for a brand new GTX 1050 Ti graphic card may already good enough to but a refurnished Core i5 PC.

780 is old but if you buy a PNY GT 1030 video card it will run just about anything you want..  The card that Shipped with the 780 is a Radeon 3450 DELL PN X398D

NEWER R series radeon cards DO NOT WORK and WILL NOT WORK due to not supporting DOS VESA video mode 103.

The PNY GT1030 is 500 percent faster than the ancient radeon card.

IF you want to use a Radeon I would recommend the NEWER Radeon 6450
