Optiplex 780 upgrade-able to Win10?
Hi,
I was trying to upgrade an Optiplex 780 from Windows 7 to Windows 10 yesterday for a friend using the MediaCreation tool. It got as far as the blue updating screen then so far through looking for updates it suddenly went back to Windows 7. When I logged into my friends account there was a message box saying it couldn't install Windows and gave the following message:-
0x8007001F - 0x20006
The installation failed in the SAFE_OS phase with an error during REPLICATE_OC operation.
Surely these machines are upgrade-able? I've upgraded lots of old Dell Optiplex 740 machines with no problem. I don't know if this is older than those but if it it can't be much older.
Can someone help please? She's a little old lady and I'd hate to have to let her down.
Thanks.

Clean install on a blank hard drive works fine.
0x8007001F indicates the hard drive has bad sectors. or antivirus program is preventing install. Antivirus will sometimes interfere with your system and cause 0x8007001F error to appear. Uninstall and restart and try again.
Get a new hard drive and install using the I don't have a key option from OEM system builder dvd.
Make sure you set the region code to 1 on the dvd for usa before trying that.

Drivers are in a single cab file that must be saved into the my documents folder then extracted with 7zip

done many Win 10 clean install on 780 and never ran into error. clean install is to delete all old hdd partition, create new partition, format, and click continue button, all these steps are just a few mouse clicks on the same screen page after choosing “advanced option” within win 10 installation. once install completes activate Win 10 using Win 7 product key. this is much easier than upgrade from 7 to 10 which is problematic.

I have this same computer the MT version and I have Windows 10 Pro installed. I used the Windows 10 DVD not a flash drive or the upgrade option to install Windows 10. I tried to install by using a Flash drive and I couldn't get it to install Windows 10.Download Windows Media Creation tool and select ISO DVD file option and burn to DVD you should be able to install Windows 10 from the DVD without problems. Also you can use your Windows 7 key to install Windows 10 on this computer.

Thanks for the reply. Did you upgrade or clean install?

Also, just for clarification, the product key is the one on the windows sticker on the machine?

Thanks for the reply.
To be honest I'm not sure what OEM system builder disk you mean. Would I not be installing using the Windows 10 MediaCreation tool and not a disk?

Thanks for the reply. I was under the impression I had to upgrade first in order for the license key to register with/as Windows 10 and then I could clean install ...
Also, for clarification, the product key is the one on the Windows sticker on the machine?

I did a clean install of Windows 10 Pro and I used the Windows 7 key code to install and it accepted the code as if it was a Windows 10 key. This was months ago and it's still working fine.

Did you do this offline then add the key or did you add the key when it asked for it during install? Thanks.

So you did your install with out being connected to the internet then added the key once install completed> And not when it asked for it right at the beginning of the install?

Doing a clean install makes me nervous. What if the product key on the sticker doesn't work?
I ran a Belarc Advisor scan and it gave me a completely different key for the Windows 7.

no worries. I always chose "no product key available" option during install and then complete the install. then get on line and type in Win 7 key. sometimes my key did not pass and then I just typed another one in to try. it is not a pass code, so no lock out ever in my experience after multiple trials and errors.

@meatwork
Not sure as it has never happened to me with the dozens of Windows 10 clean installations I have done.
If you are concerned, use Macrium Reflect Free to create an image of the hard drive and back that image to an external hard drive. I do periodic backups of the hard drive. This has saved me more than once.
