Optiplex 790 and Esata Cards

Hi Gang

I've read all the controversy about problems with esata cards. Since I have no problem using onboard port number '1' for a second storage drive was wondering if I could somehow move that drive into some type of external enclosure? I'd have to use a long cable and perhaps put the drive in an enclosure so that it can be turned off extending its life?  Any ideas?
