Optiplex 9020MT (Mini Tower) to Budget Gaming PC

Hey all,

I've love to change some things on my budget PC (Optiplex 9020 mini tower) to make it a budget gaming PC.

I read a lot of things about it and came to this Youtube playlist:
https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLV5rlj-09omynt4Zp_cjKi_oFuf_hTooH

They use an extra fan, a SATA power cable to 6 pin molex adapter for the GPU extra needed power, and some tweaks to get there, so it seems perfectly possible.

I currently have the i5-4690 processor with 8 GB 1600Mhz DDR3 RAM and an 256GB SSD (and off course the GTX 745 I want to replace) FYI it has the 290X 80plus Gold power supply.

Would you please like to advice me in what I should advice to upgrade it?

  • My idea would be more RAM --> 16Gb and maybe even faster RAM, I don't know if DDR4 is possible on this Motherboard?
  • New GPU who doesn't require too much power (about max 150W), any advice there for budget?
  • ...?

Thank you in advance

It works using the rx570

Again, thank you for all your contributions. I really do appreciate your advice and opinions.

Finally I got everything working with the original 290W PSU, I replaced the GTX 745 with a (AMD) RX 570 and it works fined. Power consumption in total is now at 200W, so still way below the 290W limit. No new PSU needed, €50 less needed.

To be honest, I got a lot of help using this youtube list:

Thanks again all. And I hope to hear from you later.

It has 4 DIMM slots so yes you can upgrade to 16=4x4 gb ram.  1600 MHz is the spec speed.  The board doesn’t allow you to OC ram, so even if you upgrade to faster ddr3, they will be forced to run at lower freq.

16 gb is plenty for budget gaming although board supports up to 32 gb (4x8).

It only supports intel 4th gen cpu, lga1150 socket, so only ddr3, no ddr4.  To use ddr4, needs at least 6th gen cpu and lga1151 socket.

In terms of gaming benchmark, i5-4690 is as good as i7-4790.  your budget gaming potential is limited by current business oriented motherboard (Dell BIOS does not allow OC of cpu).  You could go for top shelf i7-4790k which has base freq at 4.0 GHz.

The best gpu matching your i5-4690 is nvidia GTX 960.  TDP is 120W.  Nvidia recommends system psu of 400W.  9020 MT psu is only 290W.

Graphic card and processor will work great together

Intel Core i5-4690 (Clock speed at 100%) with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 960 (Clock speed at 100%) x1 will produce only 1.38% of bottleneck.

PS Nvidia psu Recommendation is made based on PC configured with an Intel Core i7 3.2 GHz processor. Pre-built system may require less power depending on system configuration.

Dear redxps360,

Thank you for the advice. I have to say though that the GTX 960 seems to be a very bad card if you compare performance against power consumption, maybe there is a better option? Any ideas you have concerning that?

Intel Core i5-4690 (Clock speed at 100%) with NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Ti(Clock speed at 100%) x1 will produce only 0.07% of bottleneck.

1050ti Minimum System Power Requirement (W): 300

does this seem like a better card to you?

So my PSU would even be able to provide for this?

gee all cards in all  PCs, , the next guys PC has  better card, for a fact, even some $4700 cards

why argue over card speeds,  it's really silly.  that. sorry but is. why?

buy what you can afford, ok,  there is no limits other than your wallet thickness. up to 4k .

this PC is good choice, for cost , used, very cheap and has max ram spec. (not as good as XPS8900 sure)

my 3020MT has 1/2 the ram allowed in your, but is plenty good.

and I have tried the worst GPU cards on earth on mine, even 289 watt+ cards. over 20 cards. GPU and none failed in 50 top games or Furmark or PASSMARK 3D max loaded up, zero failures.

i think the GTX1650 (turing class) is best for most folks, it is fast and 75watts, and no AUX power cables.

if you are  FPS (lag) online multiplayer, GOAL PERSON, then say so... most of us  can run the 1650 and be happy. not FPS GOAL 1.

with a NEW PSU THE SKY"S THE LIMIT, (talking legacy no secure boot drive , NO UEFI BULL)

really nothing can be more complex "features", upgrading GPU,vast cards and vast features, on them, go to newegg.com and read, left side bar on GPU, see, VAST and should be more, (no power limit filters yet but I keep begging them)

a new PSU is not even close to hard, 1 adapter cable and 4 screws down, (AC not connected)

i have Corsair TX750m , in mine runs them all. it will, why not you?

I have huge box, of GPU cards here,  lots. over 30. (and boxes of cardd no longer allowed with w10 , now parked in the attic,)

and I have some boxes full of the worst power hogging pigs ever made, I use those to prove PCs can run hogs.

near 300watts some. yah HOGS.  some even keep a room warm dead of winter.  (no waste there , huh)

I do not have a  GTX2080 here, I am way too cheap to try it or want it,  (have  huge steam account forever)

see the benchmark page yet, that would be first, no? look, check wallet thickness and JUMP.

24,000 users , all upgraded, ever look there?

now my posted 100 times list.

  • must fit and not hit (I use a ruler, dell does not spec out space inside, I do that. my job !
  • must not overload the PSU, nor the x16 slot.
  • must have GPU Aux cables  if card has the AUX power ports,  6 or 8 pin or both , non skipped.
  • must not over heat the inside of case, case fans if needed cure that.
  • must run on w10-64 bit
  • must have ports your monitor has.
  • must float your FPS boat. (wild card if ever there was)

New GPU who doesn't require too much power (about max 150W),(huh/)?

you seem to think that THE PSU wastes power doing nothing?

the power supply wattage is what it can do at 100% demand by YOU,  ( the loss doing nothing is minuscule)

my 150watt PSU uses 25watts in windows desktop (say reading mail)

my 750watt PSU does the same thing, I have  watt meter here and ammeter too and  can prove that.

do you fear 750watt PSU,  that run any card now or any card in the future. why?

if you want buy a 80 Plus Titanium  PSU,  and save 12% less loss at  90%load.

when gaming , a 200 watt card wastes far more heat than any PSU. (but in winter it is not waste your HOME HVAC shuts down in the room) so is never wasted, ever, only in summer is heat dumps wasted.

in summer the heat is wasted into the room then the HVAC must pump it out. causing 2 times the loss + more.

if you want to to talk power loss and heat say so. we can do that all day long.

If SFF models, including the 9020, can run the GTX 1050 ti, I believe so can the MT with 290w PSU.  Optiplex 9020 + GTX 1050 ti + YouTube list

The PSU that speedstep referenced, the 365w PSU comes from the Optiplex XE2 MT.

The card that was pre-installed was an 75W GTW 745, so I guess you're wrong about that.

Unclear who you thought was wrong about what (?).
