Questions about Optiplex 790 RAM Upgrade

I was wondering if you could use any 16 gb RAM set (DDR3) with an optiplex 790 tower with an Intel Core i5 2500@ 3.3 gigahertz for example this one: https://www.amazon.com/Tech-PC3-12800-Non-ECC-Unbuffered-Computer/dp/B00C53GN1U/ref=redir_mobile_desktop?ie=UTF8&aaxitk=yYFnB-wBkpzUnVF2TXQDsQ&hsa_cr_id=4904209290701&ref_=sb_s_sparkle

Or do I have a certain kind of DDR3?

these are 1600Mhz ddr3 ram (PC3-12800, ddr3-1600).  they will probably work and get automatically down clocked by 790 bios to 1333Mhz.  if they cost more than pc3-10600 or ddr3-1333 sticks (higher speed ram tend to be more popular), I would just get 4 identical ddr3-1333 MHz sticks which are very common and easy to find a good deal.  Those will definitely work.

True. I was able to find used modules on ebay for a little more than half that, but that's not too bad for new parts. They were 1600 Mhz too. These work because DDR memory contains a table of timings that the bios can read to select the appropriate speed.it needs to run at. Most I have seen have about 5 or 6 different timing sets it can support, so if you don't go to far off, it will work.

When I was looking last year, even the used parts were most all 1600 Mhz.
