USB device "Set address failed"

We are experiencing an issue with using the optiplex 3080 with a kinect v.2 sensor. After a seemingly random amount of days/weeks the usb-device stop working and stop showing up the device manager, instead it now has a "unknown usb-device (Set address failed)". Normally you would be able to simply fix this by taking out the USB and plugging it back in again, but we have several hundred units spread around the world so that is really not a solution for us. We have found that a workaround to this issue is to reinstall the latest bios update or any bios update really (f.ex. https://dl.dell.com/FOLDER08416807M/1/OptiPlex_3080_2.11.0.exe). This seems to trigger some sort of redetection of the usb devices and the kinect works fine after the reinstall for a period of time.

At the moment we are reinstalling an already installed bios-update on 30-80 computers each week which is a huge hassle for us.

We have several hundred optiplex 3080 and a few 60 70 and 90's they all seem to experience this issue, we also have a big amount of HP and Lenovo computers which do not seem to trigger this issue, at least not at nearly the same rate. We would really appreciate some help locating the trigger for this problem, or maybe a small tool that we can run daily by script which triggers the same "redetection" of the usb-devices.

We have tried:

  • Making sure everything is updated
  • Rebooting
  • Redetecting devices through the device manager
  • Removing and reinstalling drivers.
  • Resetting or detecting issues with devcon.exe
  • Restarting or detecting the usb-device with libusb (https://libusb.info/)
  • Restarting units daily / avoid restarting units.
  • Removing the device through device manager with uninstall of drivers. Then redetecting.
  • Removing the USB root-hub. Then redetecting.
