optiplex 780 SFF 24pin miniATX question

it seems strange that no one makes or sells straight 24 pin regular ATX to 24 mini ATX adapter.  It is always 20 pin regular ATX to 24 mini.  I got one such adapter.  I had a 780 SFF board that was working smoothly before the stock psu was given away.  Now no matter what I tried with the adapter, a regular PSU and the board, it seems there is no life in it at all.  The psu is tested working on other boards.  I have a strong suspicion the 20-24 mini adapter is not supplying the correct voltage/power to the board.  but I can not explain it.  Has any one successfully used such adapter to start up a 780 SFF?

finally I got a working 780 SFF to test the stand alone motherboard.  It turns out the stock psu with mini sata can turn on an orange light on the board, but I got a blinking amber light on power button and 1 3 led diagnostic light.  when I took out memory sticks, I got the same error. there was no beep whatsoever.  fan did not spin at all.  the error code is useless.  changing cmos battery and resetting cmos jumper had no effect.  In the end I semi pronounced the board dead, as the other board that came with the system booted well.  I did use different cpu for the two boards.  2.33 c2d for the "dead" board and E8400 for the good one. afaik 780 pretty much supports all the c2d out there.  I doubt the 2.33 cpu itself is bad.

I also determined regular sata 20 pin to mini sata 24 pin adapter does not work for 780 SFF.  There was no orange light or any sign of life when I tried that.  So unfortunately I can not advice anyone to upgrade psu for 780 SFF using adapter.  If one has to do it, use a 24 sata to 24 mini sata.  I begin to suspect the 20-24 adapter had secretly fried the board as the board was working perfectly before I tried the adapter.
