optiplex 9010/7010 (intel 3rd gen cpu) which still uses atx 24/4 pin psu like that in 790.  optiplex 9020/7020 (intel 4th gen cpu) which uses dell proprietary 8 pin psu.   both 9010/9020 use same size chassis as 790 (intel 2nd gen cpu).  all these use DDR3 ram.

after that Dell optiplex motherboard 7040/50/60/70/80/90 (essentially all DDR4 based intel cpu 5th thru 11th gen cpu) has become highly proprietary nonstandard form factor.  all these use Dell thin form factor proprietary psu.

Re: a later model in the 790 style of operation

the closest one is 7010/9010, but neither is a significant upgrade from 790.  from 3rd to 6/7th gen Intel cpu improvement is incremental.

Intel 8th gen cpu begins to be a quantum leap from the 2nd gen cpu in 790.  cpu core increases from 4 to 6 core.  cpu begins to be eligible for Windows 11.

Redxps630 did good job.  Only other thing I wanted to mention is with almost any upgrade from the 790 (any of the upgrades redxps630 mentioned) will all have USB 3.0 whereas 790 does not.  Some of the higher ones mentioned also have USB-C port.

7010/9010/7020/9020 all have tech guides and can be Googled.

The other 70XX redxps630 mentioned have spec sheets and owner's manuals that can be Googled.  Owner's manuals typically don't have much for specs as they're for maintenance or modification.

Thank you all guys - You have been a great help in deciding me to return the that I got talked into. I dont expect any argument from the providor, after all it is the second attempt to replace my original purchase - both were duds ....

I think I will choose an entry level Inspiron.... Charlie

For entry level Inspiron of modern model, can consider Inspiron 3670 (B360 chipset, Intel 8th or 9th Gen cpu).

The B360 was often considered business class chipset.

I suggest 3670 because Dell uses standard form factor psu (connectors are proprietary) in this model making it easier to upgrade.

A pro with the 3670 is that it has separate audio input and output jacks in the back.  People often run into trouble with singular jacks that are suppose to be input and output depending on what's plugged into it.
